If it is necessary to replace the rear clutch in a 1983 or early 1984 Cordia/Tredia KM 171 automatic transaxle, you should also replace the manual valve in the valve body with a new one of modified design. (See Fig. 2.) The part number of the replacement valve is #MD707703. Cars produced beginning November 27, 1983, effective with transmission number AR 6883, have this valve as original equipment. (The transmission number is the last six digits of the production number stamped in the bell housing at the location shown in Fig. 1.)

The modified manual valve, illustrated in Figure 2, has a narrower second land which allows more clearance for a free flow of return oil to the sump. This avoids the potential for any restriction which could cause a partial application of the rear clutch with attendant slippage, heat generation, and resultant failure.

When replacing the rear clutch, be sure to inspect the return spring carefully for signs of overheating is that could cause it to lose tension. The return spring shown in Figure 3.

NOTE: Follow service manual procedures when overhauling the transmission. During reassembly, be certain the inhibitor switch is properly adjusted.
