Scuff Plate - Deformation/Overlap

NO: STB-23-82-002

DATE: November, 1982

MODEL: Starion

SUBJECT:
STARION SCUFF PLATE ALIGNMENT

Some early production Starion models may have one or more door scuff plates which are twisted or deformed: or which overlap and/or displace the side cowl trim (see Figure 1). The models affected are within the following VIN ranges:

JA3BC447 * DZ400101 to JA3BC447 * DZ401031
and
JA3BC447 * DZ500101 to JA3BC447 * DZ500449

* Check Digit (Varies From Car To Car)

If this condition is encountered, correct as follows:

1. Remove the scuff plate by inserting a flat blade screwdriver under the scuff plate at each clip and prying upward (Figure 2). Be careful not to damage the scuff plate or to scratch the paint. If the scuff plate is twisted or deformed, replace it with a new part (see part numbers below) and proceed to step 3.

2. If the scuff plate overlaps or displaces the side cowl trim, use a cutting tool to trim the front edge of the scuff plate as necessary to assure a proper fit. (See Figure 3)

3. Reinstall any retainer clips that may have been removed with the scuff plate into the door sill (Figure 4). Replace any broken clips with new clips, P/N MB189627.

4. Install the scuff plate by positioning its tangs in the retainer clips and tapping lightly with your hand. (Figure 5)

5. Recheck to assure that the scuff plate does not overlap or displace the side cowl trim. Repeat step 2 above as necessary.
