TRANSMISSION DECELERATION SOUND
NO. STB-84-21-004
DATE July 1984
MODEL 1983, 1984 Starion
INTRODUCTION
A sound that comes from the Starion manual transmission when the car decelerates using the engine as a brake - usually in second gear - is a normal operating sound caused by engine torque fluctuations and does not indicate any wear, malfunction, or defect.
The sound is common to all Starion manual transmissions. It is transmitted to the passenger compartment through the gear shift lever and knob. Cars built after Apri 14, 1984 or equipped with a gear shift lever and knob that have been redesigned to reduce the amount of sound transmitted. Earlier production models can be quieted by installing these redesigned components. If in doubt as to the source of the sound, first remove the gearshift knob and drive the car. If the sound is undiminished, then look elsewhere for the cause. If the car is quieter with the knob off, then it can be quieted by installing the redesigned components.
This bulletin describes the components and installation procedure.
