SUBJECT:
INSTALLATION OF BROADCAST DEVICES
NO. STB-83-08-003 (REISSUE)

DATE April 1983

MODEL 1983 Starion
When installing CB radios, radio telephone transmitters, or ham mobile equipment in Starions, it is important that the equipment be installed in such a way that it will not interfere with the proper functioning of vehicle electronic equipment (ECI system, rear brake lock-up control system, ETACS, and cruise control system). Particular care must be given to the routing of wiring, and the location of the transmitting antenna. Following the guidelines below will help attain a satisfactory installation.

Match Cable and Antenna Impedances

Be sure to match the impedances of the antenna and the cable which carries the output signal from the transmitter to the antenna. This minimizes the standing wave ratio and decreases the possibility of adverse effect on the vehicle's electronic package.

FIGURE 1 - LOCATION OF ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT.:

Install Antenna on Roof-or Rear Bumper

A roof top antenna installation places the antenna as far as possible from the electronic equipment. Because the rear brake lock-up control electronics package is in the right side of the trunk, a right side rear bumper antenna installation is not advisable. Care must be taken when routing the cable to a left side rear bumper location so that the cable avoids the cruise control and ETACS electronic modules in the left quarter panel and under the driver's seat. Refer to Figure 1 for the location of the vehicle electronic equipment.
Avoid the Use of High Output Radio Equipment

Radio transmitters of as little as 10 Watts can have undesirable effects on Starion's on-board electronics equipment.

Test Equipment Before Using Vehicle

After installation of broadcast devices. perform the following tests to make sure that there is no abnormality.

A. Run the engine at idle, emit full output signals from the transmitter and make sure that engine operation is not affected.

B. On rear brake lock-up control system equipped cars, jack up and rotate the driving wheels. Emit full output signals from the transmitter and make sure that brake lockup does not occur.

C. On cruise control equipped cars, set the vehicle speed at about 31 mph with the cruise control system. Emit full output signals from the radio equipment and make sure the vehicle speed does not change.
