MODEL 1983 Starion
Some 1983 Starions may develop a severe stumble above 3000 rpm under load. The symptoms typically are-power drops off, the engine misses, and black smoke is emitted from the exhaust pipe. When this condition is encountered, conduct a complete ECI
system check using the ECI Checker. If nothing wrong is found and a road test shows everything normal, then a new ECI Modulator #MD082029 can be inserted between the wiring harness and the ECI computer to prevent this condition from recurring.
PROCEDURE:
1. Obtain Computer Modulator (Part #MD082029).
2. Remove cowl trim panel on right side of car.
3. Disconnect two connectors from top of ECI com- 10 Cputer.
4. Connect modulator to harness. Push the harness and modulator upward between the heater blower housing and the cowl inner panel, Note: It's a tight squeeze, and force may be needed. Take care not to damage the modulator components.
5. Connect modulator to ECI computer
6. Reinstall cowl trim panel.

at "8" will be from 0-1V to 5V rather than from 0-1V to 2.7V as shown in the chart on p. 14-27 of the 1983 Starion service manual reproduced below.
