Initial Inspection and Diagnostic Overview
On models equipped with airbags, serious injury can result from unintended airbag deployment. To disarm the airbag, refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts/Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems)/Service and Repair.

In the event of a malfunction in the rear brake lock-up control system, a signal from the ECU causes the warning lamp on the dashboard to illuminate and system operation is interrupted. Refer to Fig. 107 through 110, for diagnostic charts.
Self-Diagnostic Check
The Self-diagnosis system is checked by causing the release solenoid valve to operate.
1. Start and run engine for at least five seconds with vehicle not moving, turn ignition to Lock position, then depress brake pedal.
2. With brake pedal still depressed, turn ignition from Lock to ON position, and ensure the modulator audibly operates.
3. A dull clicking sound indicates the solenoid is operating correctly.
Function Check
1. Raise and support vehicle, ensure rear wheels are completely off the ground, then block front wheels.
2. With engine at normal operating temperature, place shift indicator in 2nd gear and accelerate until speedometer indicates approximately 19 mph.
3. While maintaining accelerator pedal position (approximately 19 mph), suddenly depress brake pedal.
4. The brakes will attempt to stop the rotation of the rear wheels. As the rear brake lock-up control system begins to operate, brake fluid pressure will be reduced, and rotation of the rear wheels will continue. This process should repeat as long as brake pedal is depressed.
