A noisy or chattering speedometer or speedometer cable on 1983 Mitsubishi vehicles may be caused by improper routing of the speedometer cable or lack of lubrication at the speedometer cable end.
This bulletin indicates critical locations to check for proper routing as applicable to the various models.
Cordia/Tredia
Ensure that the speedometer cable is routed as shown in the illustration and that the curvature at the locations indicated by the arrows has a radius of 150 mm (6") or greater.
Starion
Ensure proper routing of the speedometer cable in the three areas as shown in the illustrations and that the curvature at the locations indicated by arrows has a radius of 150 mm (6") or greater.
Truck
Ensure that the speedometer cable is routed as shown in the illustration and that the curvature at the locations indicated by arrows has a radius of 150 mm (6") or greater.
All Models
If the above procedures fail to correct the condition, check the rubber bushing at the speedometer end of the speedometer cable, and if it is damaged or deformed, replace the speedometer cable.
Lubrication
Mitsubishi speedometer cables are lubricated in production, however, when a chatter/noise condition exists, the speedometer end of the cable may be lubricated using a very small amount of graphite spray or powder.
Warranty Considerations
Normal warranty procedures apply.
