Backing Plate: Service and Repair

Brake Backing Plate





Special Tool(s)

Removal

1. CAUTION: If brake fluid is spilled on the paint work, the effected area must be immediately washed down with cold water.

Remove the brake shoes.





2. Remove the wheel cylinder.
1 Disconnect the brake tube union.
2 Remove the bolts.





3. Detach the parking brake conduit from the backing plate.
1 Depress the retaining clip.
2 Detach the conduit.





4. Disconnect the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) sensor.





5. Remove the hub dust cap.





6. CAUTION: Use a socket to protect the hub nut.

Remove the hub nut.





7. CAUTION: If the wheel bearing inner ring bore clip is displaced a complete new hub and bearing assembly will need to be installed.

Using the special tools, remove the hub.





8. Remove the backing plate.





9. Remove the backing plate seal.

Installation





1. Install the backing plate seal.





2. Install the backing plate.





3. Install the hub.





4. CAUTION: Use a socket to protect the hub nut.

Install the hub nut.





5. Install the hub dust cap.





6. Install the ABS sensor.





7. Install the parking brake conduit to the backing plate.
1 Install the conduit.
2 Secure the retaining clip.





8. Install the wheel cylinder.
1 Install the bolts.
2 Connect the brake tube union.
9. Install the brake shoes.
10. Bleed the brake system.
11. Operate the brake pedal to achieve automatic adjustment.
