Steering Gear to Fluid Cooler Return HoseSpecial Tool(s)
Removal
All vehicles
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Disconnect the hose from the power steering fluid reservoir.
^ Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.
3. Center the steering wheel.
^ Lock in position, remove the ignition key.
4. Disconnect the steering column shaft from the flexible coupling.
^ Rotate the clamp plate to disengage.
5. CAUTION: When removing the floor seal do not damage the sealing clips.
Remove the floor seal from the bulkhead.
1 Release the retaining clips.
2 Disconnect the upper retaining clip.
3 Remove the floor seal.
6. Support the radiator.
7. Loosen the left-hand front wheel nuts.
8. Raise and support the vehicle.
9. Remove the wheel.
10. Remove the radiator splash shield.
11. Disconnect the fluid cooler lines.
^ Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.
12. Remove the two splash shields (wheel removed for clarity).
13. Detach the radiator support brackets.
14. Detach the bumper support brackets.
Vehicles with air conditioning
15. NOTE: 2.0L shown 2.5L similar.
Detach the air conditioning accumulator.
16. Detach the air conditioning compressor diode wiring harness.
All vehicles
17. Detach the fluid cooler lines retaining bracket.
18. Detach the front support insulator.
Vehicles with 2.5L engine
19. Detach the rear heated oxygen sensor wiring harness.
Vehicles with automatic transaxle
20. Detach the rear support insulator.
Vehicles with manual transaxle
21. Remove the rear support insulator center bolt.
All vehicles
22. Support the subframe using a suitable transmission jack.
23. Remove the subframe bolts (support removed for clarity).
24. Lower the subframe to gain access to the steering gear lines.
25. Detach the high-pressure tube support bracket.
26. Detach the return tube support bracket.
27. CAUTION: Whenever the steering gear unions are disconnected the steering gear valve body ports should be plugged to prevent dirt ingress.
Disconnect the tube unions from the steering gear.
1 Disconnect the high-pressure tube union.
^ Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.
2 Disconnect the return tube union.
28. Remove the fluid tubes.
Installation
All vehicles
1. If new tubes are to be installed, push the tubes into the new unions.
2. Using the special tool, install new union O-ring seals.
1 Push the new O-ring seal onto the special tool.
2 Locate the tool on the union and ease the O-ring seal onto the union.
3. Connect the tube unions.
4. Install the return tube support bracket.
5. Install the high-pressure tube support bracket.
6. Install the fluid cooler lines retaining bracket.
7. Using the special tool, align the subframe.
1 Install the alignment pins in the subframe aligning holes.
2 Install the locking pins.
3 Tighten the alignment pin sleeves.
8. NOTE: Make sure the blue colored bolts are installed to the front.
Install the subframe retaining bolts.
9. Remove the special tool (subframe alignment pins).
10. Remove the subframe support.
Vehicles with manual transaxle
11. Install the rear support insulator center bolt.
Vehicles with automatic transaxle
12. Install the rear support insulator.
Vehicles with 2.5L engine
13. Install the rear heated oxygen sensor wiring harness.
All vehicles
14. Install the front support insulator.
Vehicles with air conditioning
15. Install the air conditioning compressor diode wiring harness:
16. Install the air conditioning condenser.
All vehicles
17. Install the bumper support brackets.
18. Install the radiator support brackets.
19. Install the two splash shields.
20. Connect the fluid cooler lines.
21. Install the radiator splash shield.
22. Install the driver side front wheel.
23. CAUTION: Before lowering the vehicle, make sure the steering is in the straight ahead position.
Lower the vehicle.
24. Install the floor seal.
25. WARNING: Install a new pinch bolt. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
Connect the steering column shaft to the flexible coupling.
26. Connect the hose to the power steering fluid reservoir.
27. Remove the radiator supports.
28. Connect the battery ground cable.
29. Bleed the power steering system.
