Flushing

NOTE: Always flush the steering gear when replacing the power steering pump or power steering hoses.

1. Disconnect the power steering return hose from the reservoir and place in a suitable container. Plug the reservoir return tube.

2. Fill the power steering pump reservoir with Mercon(R) ATE Power Steering Fluid or equivalent.

3. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connector.
4. Raise and support the vehicle so the wheels are off the ground.
5. Crank the engine while pouring approximately 1.9 liters (2 quarts) of power steering fluid into the power steering pump reservoir. At the same time, cycle the steering wheel from stop-to-stop.

CAUTION:
^ Avoid excess cranking; otherwise the battery will be drained and the starter motor damaged.
^ Do not hold the steering wheel against a stop for more than three to five seconds at a time.

6. Turn off the ignition after all the fluid has been added and reconnect the ignition coil electrical connector.

7. Remove the plug from the reservoir return tube and attach the power steering return hose to the power steering pump reservoir.
8. Check the fluid level and if necessary, add fluid to the proper level.
9. Lower the vehicle.

10. Start the engine and cycle the steering wheel from stop-to-stop to expel any trapped air from the system.
