Cruise Control: Description and Operation
The speed control system consists of:- Speed Control Servo.
- Speed Control Cable.
- Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS).
- Horn Relay and Bracket.
- Speed Control Actuator Switches.
- Stoplight Switch.
- Deactivator Switch.
The additions to the speed control system required for vehicles equipped with traction assist system include:
- Speed control cutout relay located in the power distribution box.
- Traction control switch mounted on the instrument panel.
Manual transaxle vehicles either with or without traction control require:
- Clutch pedal position switch mounted on the pedal bracket.
The system operates independent of engine vacuum; therefore no vacuum lines are required.
The speed control servo:
- Is mounted in the engine compartment near the power brake booster.
- Is connected to the throttle body with the speed control cable.
- Electronics are integrated into the speed control servo, eliminating the need for any other speed control electronic modules in the vehicle.
The speed control actuator switch buttons are mounted to the steering wheel. They consist of:
- LH buttons:
- ON
- OFF
- RH buttons:
- RES (RESUME) SET (Set/Accel) ACC
- COAST
The vehicle speed sensor:
- Is mounted to the transaxle.
- Is a magnetic pickup sensing a gear which is driven by the transaxle.
- The VSS signal sent to the speed control servo is proportional to vehicle speed.
The air bag sliding contact is located at the center of the steering wheel. It transfers electrical signals from the steering column wiring to:
- The driver side air bag module.
- The horn blow switch.
- The speed control actuator switches.
The stoplight switch:
- Is a normally open switch and closes when the brake pedal is applied.
- Then, an electrical signal is sent to the speed control servo and the speed control system is disengaged.
- When the brake pedal is released, the stoplamp circuit opens and the stoplight switch returns to its open position.
The deactivator switch:
- Is a normally closed switch that acts as a redundant safety feature in the system.
- When the brake pedal is applied, an electrical signal from the stoplamp circuit to the speed control servo disengages the system.
- Is mounted next to the stoplight switch.
