Disc Brake System: Service Precautions

CAUTION: Do not pry on front disc brake caliper piston with a screwdriver or other tools, as this will cause chipping, nicks and gouges.

1. Grease or any other foreign material must be kept off lining surfaces and the braking surfaces of the front disc brake rotors, brake shoes and linings and the external surfaces of the wheel hubs during service operations.
2. In handling the front disc brake rotor and disc brake caliper, avoid deformation of the front disc brake rotor, and nicking or scratching of the brake shoes and linings.
3. If a caliper piston is removed for any reason, the piston seals must be replaced. Exercise care not to damage the caliper piston; protect it from contact with any metal or sharp objects.
4. Do not attempt to clean or restore any oil- or grease-soaked brake shoes and linings. When contaminated linings are found, brake shoes and linings must be replaced in complete sets and the front disc brake rotor braking surfaces washed clean.
5. Disc brake calipers must be installed with the bleeder screws in an upward position for proper bleeding of air from the brake system.
6. When removing rear disc brake caliper, never allow it to hang from rear brake hose. Provide a suitable support.
7. Brake shoes and linings must be replaced in complete axle sets.
8. The LH and RH rear disc brake calipers must be installed on the correct side of the vehicle to be sure the parking brake lever and support are in the proper position.
9. The LH and RH disc brake calipers must be installed on the correct side of the vehicle to be sure the bleeder screws are in the proper position (up).
10. After any service, pump the brake pedal to obtain a firm brake pedal before moving the vehicle.
