Disassembly






CAUTION: Do not remove the steering column, steering wheel and air bag module as an assembly from the vehicle unless the steering column is locked to prevent rotation or lower end of steering shaft is wired in such a way to prevent the steering wheel from being rotated, as this will damage the air bag sliding contact.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable. Disconnect air bag backup power supply. See Air Bags and Seat Belts.
2. Remove steering wheel assembly.
3. Remove air bag sliding contact.
4. Remove steering column from vehicle.





5. Remove turn indicator cancel cam by pushing up with flat-bladed screwdriver. Note direction of flush surface.





6. Remove ignition switch assembly.
7. Using snap ring pliers, remove snap ring retaining bearing retainer and steering column upper bearing spring.





8. Remove bearing retainer and steering column
9. Remove steering column bearing tolerance ring.
10. Remove seven screws retaining transmission column shift selector tube to steering column (column shift only).





11. Remove shift lock actuator.





12. Using a drift, tap steering column lock actuator lever pin loose. Remove with diagonal pliers.





13. Remove plastic bearing retainer from lock cylinder bore.





14. Remove steering column lock housing bearing from lock cylinder bore.
15. Remove ignition lock gear.
16. Remove steering column lower yoke, steering column upper bearing spring, suspension height sensor control ring and steering column bearing tolerance ring from lower end of steering column.





17. Remove two pivot bolts. Use caution as steering column position spring will release when bolts are removed.
18. Remove ignition lock cylinder housing from column assembly and pull steering shaft out from top.





19. Remove steering column lock lever actuator.





20. Remove lower steering column tube bearing retainer and mounting bracket.





21. Remove tilt position lever arm pivot pin using a drift. Remove steering column locking lever and steering column position lock spring.
