Removal

CAUTION:
- Do not begin this removal procedure unless a new rear axle wheel hub retainer and a new inboard CV joint stub shaft driveshaft bearing retainer circlip are available.
- Once removed, these parts must not be reused during assembly. Their torque-holding ability or retention capability is diminished during removal.
- Discard the rear axle wheel hub retainer. It is a torque-prevailing design and cannot be reused.

Hub Retainer Nut:

1. Remove RH wheel cover. Remove rear axle wheel hub retainer using a 36 mm socket. Loosen lug nuts.
2. Raise vehicle on a frame contact hoist.

CAUTION: A frame contact hoist must be used to avoid damage to the halfshafts and halfshaft boots.

3. Remove lug nuts and wheel and tire.

CAUTION: Some vehicles are equipped with directional tires. Always make sure tires are installed in their original positions.

4. Remove brake drums (if equipped).

5. Remove RH and LH rear brake anti-lock sensors.

CAUTION: Damage to the sensors may occur if they are not removed before the halfshafts.

6. Remove rear suspension arm and bushing bolt. Wire upper suspension arm to top of rear shock absorber so it does not interfere with or damage CV joint boot when halfshaft is removed.

7. Using a paint marker, mark the position of the rear suspension arm and bushing in relation to the rear wheel knuckle with the bushings in the relaxed position.

WARNING: FAILURE TO MARK THIS POSITION WILL CAUSE BUSHING WINDUP ON REASSEMBLY AND INCORRECT RIDE HEIGHT. THIS WILL CAUSE MISALIGNMENT AND PREMATURE TIRE WEAR.

8. Install Front Hub Remover/Replacer T81P-1104-C with Metric Hub Remover Adapters T83P-1104-BH on Hub Adapter T86P-1104-A1 to RH wheel studs as shown. Turn wrench counterclockwise until halfshaft is free in rear hub.

9. Remove rear suspension arm and bushing-to-rear suspension arm and bushing retaining bolts.

10. Remove rear wheel knuckle assembly from driveshaft and joint assembly.

11. Carefully rest halfshaft on rear suspension arm and bushing and wire rear wheel knuckle to top of rear shock absorber.

WARNING: DO NOT STRETCH, TWIST OR KINK BRAKE HOSE ASSEMBLY.

12. Remove RH halfshaft from rear axle housing using CV Joint Remover T89P-3514-A.

NOTE: Inboard CV joint stub shaft pilot bearing housing seal must be replaced whenever the halfshaft is removed.

13. Remove halfshaft from vehicle.

14. Install Differential Plug T89P-4850-B into rear axle housing to prevent lubricant loss.

15. Mark driveshaft centering socket yoke in relation to rear axle universal joint flange. Remove driveshaft retaining bolts.

16. Slide driveshaft forward and rest on driveshaft center bridge support reinforcement.

17. With a transmission jack supporting the rear axle housing, remove rear axle differential rear insulator-to-crossmember retaining nuts.

18. Remove rear axle differential rear insulator from axle housing cover.

19. Remove axle front retaining bolts, nuts, bushings and washers.

20. Remove LH halfshaft (inboard CV joint) from rear axle housing using CV Joint Remover T89P-3514-A. Push tool inward (toward rear axle housing).

CAUTION: Do not damage CV joint boot.

NOTE: Inboard CV joint stub shaft pilot bearing housing seal must be replaced whenever a halfshaft (CV joint) has been removed from the rear axle housing.

21. Partially lower rear axle housing. While lowering rear axle housing, move to the right and disengage rear axle housing from LH inboard CV joint stub shaft.
22. Install Differential Plug T89P-4850-B in LH side of rear axle housing and lower rear axle housing from vehicle.
