Steering Shaft: Service and Repair






REMOVAL
1. Remove bolt from steering column lower yoke. Collapse lower steering column shaft.
2. Remove two nuts retaining primary steering column opening weather seal to dash panel and remove steering column opening weather seal.
3. Remove bolt retaining lower steering column shaft assembly to steering column intermediate shaft coupling.

CAUTION: Be sure the steering column is in the locked position. The lower end of the steering column may be wired in such a way to prevent the steering wheel from being turned as air bag sliding contact will be damaged.

4. From inside of vehicle, remove lower steering column shaft.

INSTALLATION
1. Install primary steering column tube boot over steering column intermediate shaft coupling and down onto two studs in dash panel.
2. Install lower steering column shaft through steering column opening weather seal and to steering column intermediate shaft coupling. Install a new bolt and tighten to 41-54 Nm (31-39 ft. lbs.).
3. Install two steering column tube boot retaining nuts. Tighten to 8-10 Nm (71-88 inch lbs.).
4. Extend lower steering column shaft and insert into steering column lower yoke at end of steering column. Tighten bolt to 22-28 Nm (16-20 ft. lbs.).
5. Check steering column for proper operation.
