1988 Mercury Tracers built at the Hermosillo Assembly Plant from April 22, 1987 through May 27, 1987. A listing of affected cars delivered to your dealership is enclosed.

TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS

1. Remove rear package tray.

2. Refer to Exhibit I, Figure 1. Remove package tray side shelf by removing the two package tray latch screws and inserting a trim tool under the forward corner and twisting. Slide shelf forward and lift out.
3. Remove two plastic screws securing the top of the quarter trim panel.

4. Remove tail light access door.

5. Remove the 7 quarter trim panel retaining screws. Move trim panel out of position.

6. Refer to Exhibit I, Figure 2. Install the rear strut torquing tool #014-00630 on top of the strut mounting studs and secure with the tool nuts provided.

NOTE: Be sure the word "Inboard" stamped on the tool faces the center of the vehicle. Failure to do this will allow the center collar to turn and will not allow the proper torque to be applied.
Tighten the upper strut nut to 40 to 43 ft.lbs.

7. Remove tool.

8. Install quarter trim panel and tail light access door.

9. Install package tray side shelf.

10. Repeat procedure for the other side.

11. Install rear package tray.
