Brake Shoe: Service and Repair

1. Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
2. Remove grease cap, then using a suitable chisel, raise staked portion of wheel bearing locknut.
3. Remove rear bearing locknut. The locknut located at the left hand rear wheel bearing is turned counterclockwise to loosen. The locknut located at the right hand rear wheel bearing is rotated clockwise to loosen.
4. Remove outer wheel bearing, then remove brake drum and bearing hub assembly.
5. Remove brake shoe hold-down springs, then pull front shoe away from backing plate and disconnect return springs and remove front shoe, Fig. 2.
6. Remove return springs from rear shoe, then disconnect anti-rattle spring attaching rear shoe to parking brake strut and remove rear shoe.
7. if necessary, remove adjuster assembly.
8. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Prior to installing brake shoes, apply lubricant D7AZ-19590-A or equivalent to six brake shoe contact areas on backing plate, brake shoe anchor plate and the toothed quadrant of the adjuster mechanism. Use care not to allow grease to contact brake lining surfaces.
b. After installing brake shoes, insert screwdriver between adjuster knurled quadrant and parking brake strut. Twist screwdriver until quadrant just contacts backing plate.
c. Prior to installation, pack wheel bearings and hub cavity with a suitable wheel bearing grease.
d. Position brake drum on spindle and install outer bearing and a new locknut, then adjust wheel bearing and stake locknut as described under ``Rear Wheel Bearing, Adjust.''
e. After completing installation, firmly depress brake pedal several times to adjust brake shoe to drum clearance.
