^ LEAKS - COOLANT FROM RADIATOR SIDE TANKS
MERKUR: 1988 SCORPIO
ISSUE: Coolant leaks from the radiator may be caused by the side tanks not sealing to the radiator core. This may be caused by the crimping process used during assembly of the radiator.
ACTION: To correct this, install a new improved radiator. Refer to the following service procedure.
1. Remove cooling system pressure cap from expansion tank filler neck. If system is hot and pressurized, pressure must be released before fully opening cap.
WARNING: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE THE COOLANT EXPANSION BOTTLE CAP UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES WHILE THE ENGINE IS OPERATING. TO DO SO MIGHT LEAD TO COOLING SYSTEM AND ENGINE DAMAGE, AND COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY FROM HOT COOLANT OR STEAM.
2. Drain cooling system.
3. Disconnect lower and upper hoses at radiator.
4. Disconnect automatic transmission fluid cooler inlet and outlet lines from radiator. Plug lines to prevent excessive fluid loss.
5. Disconnect A/C cooling fan switch connector.
6. Remove upper fan shroud bolts. Drive out center pin from plastic shroud attaching rivets and remove rivets. Remove upper shroud.
NOTE: Shroud retention rivets and radiator insulators must be saved for use on new radiator.
7. Remove two (2) bolts and washers from lower mounts. Disengage upper securing studs by depressing tabs, and remove radiator from below. Remove insulators and spacer.
8. Remove lower shroud from radiator.
9. Obtain a new radiator (E7RY-8005-E). Make sure insulators are in position on radiator studs in radiator support. Position radiator from below and install upper securing studs to insulators in radiator support.
10. Install radiator mounting bolts from below. Position insulating bushings, spacer and washers both above and below the brackets as the bolts are installed. Tighten bolts to 6-8 ft.- lbs. (8-12 N-m).
11. Connect radiator lower hose and lower transmission cooler return line.
12. Close radiator draincock.
13. Connect upper transmission cooler supply line.
14. Connect A/C cooling fan switch connector.
15. Connect radiator upper hose.
16. Install upper and lower shrouds with plastic attaching rivets.
17. Fill and bleed cooling system. Install pressure cap. Warm up engine to pressurize system and check for leaks. Refer to Section 27-01 of the Scorpio Shop Manual.
