* LOSS OF POWER - 2.9L EFI - AT ROAD SPEED
MERKUR: 1988 SCORPIO
ISSUE: Loss of power, or bucking and jerking may occur during decel or at road speed on some 1988 Scorpio vehicles. This condition can be caused by a loose connection at the air conditioner compressor clutch diode. An EEC IV selftest code may or may not be present.
ACTION: To correct this, modify the compressor clutch diode using the following diagnostic service procedure.
Figure 22:
1. Carefully remove the plastic sleeve covering the air conditioning clutch diode, Figure 22.
2. Remove diode from circuit by unplugging bullet connector at each end of diode.
3. Use a multi-meter with a diode test position (Rotunda No. 007-00001 or equivalent) check for proper diode function. You should have high resistance with the meter connected one way or low resistance with the test leads reversed.
4. Reconnect diode and make sure connection is secure and complete.
5. Wrap diode, and interface connection, with electrical insulating tape.
6. Check air conditioning system operation by using the passenger compartment control.
