Brake Pad: Service and Repair
Fig. 5 Front Outboard Pad Removal:
FRONT
Removal
1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove wheel and tire assembly.
3. Disconnect brake pad wear sensor electrical connector from main harness. Remove connector from clip, leaving clip in position under bleed screw.
4. Remove spring retaining clip from caliper housing.
5. Unfasten caliper assembly and position aside. Do not disconnect brake line.
6. Remove inboard brake pad from piston.
7. Force piston into caliper housing using tool No. D79L-2196-A or equivalent, Fig. 1, then remove outboard pad.
Installation
1. Install inboard pad into caliper piston, then the outboard pad into anchor bracket.
2. Install pad sensor wiring clip, then the caliper assembly. Torque caliper bolts to 15-18 ft. lbs.
3. Install wheel and tire assembly, then lower vehicle.
4. Pump brake pedal several times to properly position brake pads before moving vehicle.
5. Verify proper operation of pad wear warning lamp, then road test vehicle.
REAR
Removal
1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove wheel and tire assembly.
3. Disconnect parking brake cable from bracket.
4. Remove front caliper slide pin bolt securing piston housing to anchor bracket.
5. Separate piston assembly from brake rotor, then remove brake pads from carrier bracket.
6. Turn piston clockwise into housing using piston adjuster tool No. T87P-2588-A or equivalent. Ensure one slot in piston will engage with tab on back of brake pad during installation.
Installation
1. Position brake pads in carrier bracket, then install caliper assembly over brake rotor. Ensure anti-rattle springs are properly positioned in housing and tab in brake pad aligns with slot in piston. Adjuster tool No. T87P-2588-A or equivalent may be used to align piston if necessary.
2. Install front caliper bolt and torque to 23-25 ft. lbs.
3. Connect parking brake cable, then install wheel and tire assembly.
4. Lower vehicle, then pump brake pedal several times to properly position brake pads before operation.
