Hydraulic Control Assembly - Antilock Brakes: Service and Repair

Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) - Hybrid

Removal and Installation

WARNING: Wear high-voltage insulated safety gloves and a face shield when working with high-voltage batteries or cables. The high-voltage insulated safety gloves should be of the appropriate safety and protection rating. Inspect the gloves before use and always wear them with the leather outer glove. Any hole in the rubber insulating glove is a potential entry point for high-voltage. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury or death.

WARNING: Do not use any fluid other than clean brake fluid meeting manufacturer's specification. Additionally, do not use brake fluid that has been previously drained. Following these instructions will help prevent system contamination, brake component damage and the risk of serious personal injury.

WARNING: Carefully read cautionary information on product label For EMERGENCY MEDICAL INFORMATION seek medical advice. In the USA or Canada on Ford/Motorcraft products call: 1-800-959-3673. For additional information, consult the product Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) if available. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury.

NOTICE: Brake fluid is harmful to painted and plastic surfaces. If brake fluid is spilled onto a painted or plastic surface, immediately wash the surface with water.

NOTE: The ABS module is part of the hydraulic control unit (HCU). Do not separate the ABS module from the HCU.

NOTE: When installing a new HCU and ABS module, it must be configured using the vehicle as-built data.

NOTE: The HCU must be depressurized before proceeding with any mechanical repair to the brake system.

1. Depressurize the HCU using the following sequence.
1. Mark the level of the brake fluid in the master cylinder before arting the depressurization of the system.
2. Turn the key to the OFF position and let the vehicle stand for 4 minute without opening the doors, pressing the brake pedal or activating the key fob. If any of these action occur, the system pressurizes and the procedure must be repeated.
3. When the brake fluid level has increased approximately 12 mm (0.47 in), the system has fully depressurized.

2. Depower the high voltage battery. For additional information, refer to Hybrid Drive Systems Service and Repair
3. Remove the battery junction box (BJB) fuses 9 (50A) and 18 (50A).
4. Remove the HCU heat shield.
- Remove the heat shield pin-type fastener.
- Remove the heat shield bolt.
- To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).

5. Disconnect the electrical connector by rotating the protective cover.
6. Loosen the clamp and remove the brake fluid low pressure feed hose.
- To install, tighten to 3 Nm (27 lb-in).

7. Loosen the clamp and remove the brake fluid low pressure return hose.
- To install, tighten to 3 Nm (27 lb-in).

8. NOTE: Note the order of the brake tube.

Disconnect the brake tube-to-HCU fittings (1O mm).
- To install, tighten to 18 Nm (13 lb-ft).

9. NOTE: Note the order of the brake tube.

Disconnect the brake tube-to-HCU fittings (12 mm).
- To install, tighten to 18 Nm (13 lb-ft).

10. Disconnect the brake tube from the routing clip located at the bottom of the HCU bracket.

11. Remove the A/C tube bracket-to-HCU.
- To install, tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).

12. Remove the 2 ground wire nuts and position the 2 ground wires aside.
- To install, tighten to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft).

13. Remove the 3 HCU bracket-to-frame studs.
- To install, tighten to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft).

14. Remove the HCU assembly..
15. NOTE: When installing, use 3 suitable lubricant.

Remove the 3 HCU grommet.

16. NOTE: Use care not to cross the tubes during installation. If the brake tubes are crossed, the ABS module will set DTC during an ABS event.

To install, revere the removal procedure.

17. Bleed the brake system. Brake Bleeding
18. NOTE: Vehicle must be on a level surface and at a complete standstill during calibration.

Carry out the IVD Initialization sequence. Follow the scan tool direction.
