Task
The control and operating unit has the following tasks:
^ Operation of the vehicle's climate control
^ Reading in of sensors and signals
^ Evaluation of input factors
^ Actuation of components

Operation of the vehicle's climate control
The control and operating unit enables the following operations:
- Interior temperature selection separated for the left and right side
- Automatic blower control and air distribution
- Manual blower control and air distribution
- Setting of ventilation mode to "FOCUS" (strong air flow), "MEDIUM" (default setting) or "DIFFUSE" (low air flow)
- Switching the automatic air conditioning on and off
- Defrost function
- Switch refrigerant compressor (A9) on/off
- Recirculated air mode
- Utilization of residual heat
- Control of the rear window heater (R1)

It is operated with the following controls:
^ Button "OFF"
^ "AUTO" button
^ Temperature selector wheel
^ Air volume buttons
^ Air distribution button
^ "AIR FLOW" button
^ "A/C" button
^ Rear window heater button
^ "ZONE" button
^ Air recirculation mode button
^ Defrosting button
^ REST button

"OFF" button
The automatic air conditioning can be switched off completely or switched back on by pressing the "OFF" button.

"AUTO" button
The air volume and the air distribution are controlled automatically when the "AUTO" button is pressed. If automatic mode is activated, the LED illuminates.

Temperature selector wheel
The specified temperature desired for the left or right side can be set by turning the relevant temperature selector wheel. The temperature is shown on the display.
When the temperature is set to MAX, "HI" appears on the display, "LO" when the temperature is set to MIN

Air volume buttons
The air volume can be manually set by pressing the air volume button. The selected setting is shown on the display.

Air distribution button
The desired air distribution can be set by pressing the air distribution button.
The selected air distribution setting is shown on the display.

"AIR FLOW" button
The "AIR FLOW" button enables the "DIFFUSE", "MEDIUM" or "FOCUS" ventilation mode to be selected:
- "DIFFUSE" air flow: The air flow remains low and is not aimed at the passengers, if possible
- "Medium" air flow: Default air flow setting in automatic mode
- "FOCUS" air flow: The air flow remains somewhat higher
The selected ventilation mode is indicated on the display.
The corresponding ventilation mode can only be adjusted in the automatic mode.

"A/C" button
Pressing the "A/C" button switches the refrigerant compressor on or off. All other functions are retained. The LED lights up when the refrigerant compressor is switched on.

Rear window heater button
The rear window heater is switched on when the rear window heater button is pressed. The LED illuminates during operation.
The operating time of the rear window heater is calculated by the rear SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/2) depending on the outside temperature, interior temperature and vehicle speed.
The detailed rear window heater procedure is described in the rear window heater (HHS) function description.

"ZONE" button
By pressing the "ZONE" button, the temperature values set for the driver side are adopted for the passenger side and the rear area.
The LED goes out when the function is activated.
If the temperature on the passenger side or in the rear is adjusted manually, the LED comes on, indicating the multizone temperature in the vehicle.

Air recirculation mode button
By actuating the air recirculation mode button for t < 1.5 s the fresh air/recirculated air flap is closed to prevent air from flowing in from outside. The air only circulates in the vehicle interior and unpleasant odors and harmful gases are kept out.
The light-emitting diode in the air recirculation mode button is illuminated during operation.
Pressing the air recirculation mode button for t > 1.5 s activates comfort air recirculation closing.
The side windows and the tilting/sliding roof (SHD) (with code (414) Power glass tilting/sliding sunroof) are closed in the process.
If the air recirculation mode button is pressed again for t > 1.5 s, the side windows and the tilting/sliding roof return to their previous positions.
Side windows or the tilting/sliding roof that were manually opened during the air recirculation phase do not return to their previous positions once the phase is over.
The detailed convenience recirculation closing procedure is described in the convenience feature (CF [KFB]) function.

Defrosting button
Pressing the defrosting button sets the temperature to "maximum" and distributes the air flow to the defroster vents. All the other flaps are closed. The blower output is regulated to match the coolant temperature.
When the function is activated, the LED illuminates.

REST button
With circuit 15C ON or circuit 15R ON, pressing the "REST" button activates the residual heat utilization function. When the function is activated, the LED illuminates.
The electronic ignition lock control unit (N73) sends the status of circuit 15 to the interior CAN (CAN B).

Reading in of sensors and signals
The input factors are read in via the following connections:
^ Direct line
^ Climate control LIN (LIN B8)
^ Interior CAN

Direct line
The following signals and sensors are read via a direct line:
- Interior temperature sensor (B10/4)
- Evaporator temperature sensor (B10/6)
- Left side air outlet temperature sensor (B10/31)
- Right side air outlet temperature sensor (B10/32)
