^ MOST

Direct line
The COMAND controller unit sends signals via direct lines to the following components:
- Audio signals to the speaker system (without code (810) Sound system):
- Left front door speaker (H4/1)
- Left front door tweeter (H4/1h1)
- Right front door speaker (H4/2)
- Right front door tweeter (H4/2h1)
- Left rear door speaker (H4/3)
- Left rear door tweeter (H4/3h1)
- Right rear door speaker (H4/4)
- Right rear door tweeter (H4/4h1)
- Video signals via low voltage differential signal (LVDS) line to the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8).
- Control signals for COMAND fan motor
In addition to issuing electrical signals, the COMAND controller unit also sends voltages to the following components via a direct line:
- Power supply for COMAND fan motor
- Wake-up for MOST to following control units:
- Sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with code (810) Sound system)
- Media interface control unit
- Digital TV tuner

^ Navigation and GPS control unit
^ Turn rate sensor
^ Control unit for voice control system (VCS [SBS])
^ Card reader for memory card

Controls
The buttons on the operating panel of the COMAND controller unit are read in and relayed to the central computer. The button operations are processed further in the central computer and forwarded via MOST, the telematics CAN and the interior CAN to the other system components in the form of messages. If the ON button on the COMAND controller unit is pressed, the COMAND controller unit is switched on.
The volume is regulated by turning the ring gear's "ON" button. The function keys switch over to the audio source desired by the user.
In the event of system fault or system crash, pressing the "ON" button for t = 8 s will reboot the COMAND controller unit.

DVD drive
The integrated DVD drive can be used to read in data from the navigation DVD (e.g. navigation update) or play an audio CD/DVD or video DVD.
Only original audio CDs can be converted to the MP3 format and stored on the hard disk.

Navigation and GPS control unit
The navigation processor is integrated into the COMAND controller unit and it uses the incoming antenna signals, wheel speeds and the signal of the turn rate sensor to calculate the location and then - after entering the destination - the route of the vehicle.

Turn rate sensor
The turn rate sensor determines the direction changes of the vehicle.
It is installed into the navigation processor. A calibration is not required.

Control unit for voice control system (VCS [SBS])
The voice commands are processed and evaluated in the COMAND controller unit. The voice outputs for the dialogue with the user are generated in the COMAND controller unit.

Card reader for memory cards
The integrated card reader enables data (except audio data) to be transferred from a memory card onto the hard disk and called up.
Audio data on the memory card can be played from it, but not copied onto the hard disk.

Card reader variants
In vehicles up to 30.6.11 the card reader is compatible with Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) memory cards.
In vehicles as of 1.7.11 the card reader is compatible with Secure Digital (SD) memory cards.

Diagnosis
The COMAND controller unit is the diagnosis gateway for all MOST subscribers and the directly connected communications control unit.
The diagnostic communication takes place between the COMAND controller unit and the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module (N10/1) via the interior CAN. The diagnostic communication between the front SAM control unit with fuse and relay module and the diagnostic connector (X11/4) connected to the diagnostic tester is performed via the diagnostic CAN (CAN D).
