COMAND, general
The COMAND control unit (A40/3) is the central control for the entertainment and communication systems integrated into the vehicle.

The mobile phone function has its own independent function description and is therefore not described here.

The COMAND contains the following subfunctions, which are described in separate documents:

^ Audio mode, function
^ Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) function (with code (537) Digital radio)
^ Satellite Digital Audio Radio (satellite radio) (SDAR) function (with code (536) SIRIUS satellite radio)

^ Navigation mode function (without code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer)
^ Video mode, function
^ Voice control function (without code (528) COMAND incl. DVD changer)

The displays and menu displays for the COMAND are generated by the Audio/COMAND display (A40/8).
The following applications are also displayed in the instrument cluster (A1) at the same time as being displayed in the Audio/ COMAND display:
- Audio (e.g. "RADIO", "DISC")
- Navigation ("NAVI")
- Telephone ("TEL")

The COMAND control unit supports the following control units, which are available as special equipment:
- Sound system amplifier control unit (N40/3) (with code (810) Sound system)
- Digital Audio Broadcasting control unit (N87/3) (with code (537) Digital radio)
- Satellite digital audio radio control unit (SDAR) (N87/5) (with code (536) SIRIUS satellite radio, up to 31.5.09)
- SDAR control unit / High definition tuner (N87/8) (with code (536) SIRIUS satellite radio), as of 1.6.09)
- Media interface control unit (N125/1) (with code (518) Media interface)

The COMAND control unit acts as a gateway. It routes the signals from the interior CAN (CAN B) to the components on the telematics CAN (CAN A) and on the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST).
