Telematics System Software Update
If you receive customer reports on the above model vehicles regarding COMAND and Telematics System having any of the conditions below or when a component is replaced, please update the COMAND Head Unit and the Telematics Ring software using DAS Version 08/08 or later and SD Flash Telematics disc: A221 827 63 59 ES2: 0002 (or newer) as instructed by DAS per the below procedure. Make sure all the necessary patches are installed before starting your update process.
Important:
Discard the older Telematics CD (221 827 63 59 ES2:0001) released with DAS 06/08 immediately. Continuing to use this CD may cause the Voice Control System (VCS) to become inoperative which may lead to unnecessary replacement of the VCS.
Note:
As of the new V221/216 Models, the Telematics Ring is updated by DAS as software "profile" when there's a replacement of a Telematics Control Module or when a software update is needed to correct any of the conditions listed below. The components and their updated software versions are:
COMAND/TGW 03/08
Satellite Radio 33/07
Sound, Tuner/Amplifier 36/07
The software update process starts with the COMAND Head Unit/Telematics Gateway and by following the SDS prompts; the remainder of the Telematics Ring will be updated.
System Conditions:
^ Intermittently, head unit does not display radio station name, artist and track (RDS) information
^ During a multi-line telephone call while in navigation screen, the COMAND display may turn dark
^ Audio source volume (music) not lowering during a navigation announcement in route guidance
^ Intermittently, vehicle shows incorrect position even with more than 3 satellites visible
^ Wrong navigation compass indicator
^ Back up camera image intermittently not shown on the COMAND display
^ Accessing the voice mail box using a press & hold "1" (Speed Dial). Please make sure your voice mail is in speed dial position "1".
^ The user's cellular telephone phonebook entries are not completely downloaded into the head unit's phonebook.
^ COMAND display swivels left-right on its own and may not stop until the driver turns ignition OFF
^ Intermittent resets of the COMAND head unit, system will power OFF and then ON. This can occur especially when driving on wide highways with active Navigation Route Guidance.
^ During an active telephone call, if the user receives an incoming call and tries to reject it by pressing the central controller "REJECT" both calls may be incorrectly terminated.
^ In the telephone book, using the option of changing from ABC --> 123 --> ABC to view the telephone entry and its corresponding phone number: intermittently, the head unit does not correctly change (toggle) the display between the name and number.
^ No sound during start up with empty play field on the head unit.
^ Incorrect GPS coordinates displayed on the status line.
^ Inaccurate navigation voice or visual announcements during active route guidance in a well digitized area, or an area where correct route guidance can be achieved using another like model vehicle under identical conditions and use case.
Telematics System Software Update Process:
Connect a battery charger; turn engine and electrical consumers OFF.
The Telematics Flash Update can be performed using either of the following SDS menu paths:
1. Control units --> Information and Communication --> Audio, video, navigation, and Telematics --> COMAND --> Control Unit Adaptations --> Control Module Programming.
2. Control units --> Information and Communication --> Audio, video, navigation, and Telematics --> Select the Specific control module being installed --> Initial Start-up --> Initial Start-up with automatic takeover of settings of previous control unit.
Note:
When inserting SD Flash Telematics disc into the DVD changer, please wait until the disc is recognized, the message "DVD Changer Audio Format Unknown" will appear in the COMAND screen. Ignore this message as the process and press F2 in DAS to initiate the update process.
Vehicles up to MY 2007 only equipped with Rear-View / Back-up Camera (option code 218):
With the new Telematics software, the parking-assist guidelines and icons may be missing. To remedy, the COMAND needs to be coded to bring back the back-up Camera icons with the corresponding guidelines for the parking-assist option. These icons will assist the driver in selecting between the two parking modes:
Parallel or Back up. Follow the path to code the COMAND: Control units --> Information and communication --> Audio, video, navigation and Telematics --> COMAND --> Control unit adaptations --> Read coding and modify if necessary --> Display all COMAND codings
The coding must be set as follows:
Rear View Camera installed: YES
Reversing camera: Camera with Parking assist
If the coding is not set as specified above, press F2 to return to the previous menu and select the item "Set vehicle and equipment dependent codings automatically". Run through the subsequent steps and check the codings that both, Camera and Parking Assist are selected.
SPECIAL CASE: Enabling the Navigation functions after a Head Unit replacement
Should a head unit require a replacement, enable the Navigation Database using the new procedure implemented as DAS 01/07. As of DAS 01/07, a Navigation Database DVD is no longer needed.
