GF82.85-P-3136SXU COMAND Controller Unit, Component Description

Component Identification:

Location
The COMAND controller unit is installed into the center console.

Task
The most important task is to ensure that uniform and user-friendly displays of all the individual components integrated in the system are generated. The COMAND controller unit centrally actuates the following systems:
^ Audio system (e.g. radio, audio CD)
^ Navigation system
^ Telephone system

Design
Integrated into the COMAND controller unit are the following:
^ Digital versatile disk (DVD) ROM drive
^ Central computer
^ Interface to the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST)

Function
The following functions are realized by the COMAND controller unit:
^ Administration of all audio sources
^ Generation and transmission of messages to the COMAND display (A40/8) and the instrument cluster (A1)
^ Transmission of signals to the central gateway control unit (N93) for further processing
^ Execution of cyclic self-diagnosis and, if required, automatic recalibration
^ Administration and listing of Bluetooth devices
^ Determination of position, change in direction and distance traveled during navigation

The following control units can be actuated by the COMAND controller unit:
^ Audio tuner control unit (N93/1)
^ COMAND display
^ Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1)
^ Emergency call system control unit (N123/4)
^ Backup camera control unit (N66/2), with code (218) Backup camera

Display
The COMAND display was installed centrally next to the instrument cluster to enhance operator convenience. The data transfer between the COMAND controller unit and the COMAND display takes place via the telematics CAN.

Navigation processor
The complete navigation function is carried out in the COMAND controller unit. A hard disk is installed for this purpose. Moreover, a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver and a turn rate sensor are integrated.

The GPS receiver serves as a reception unit for the satellite signals. The task of the turn rate sensor is to recognize changes in direction (e.g. when cornering).

DVD and DVD ROM drive
The COMAND controller unit is equipped with an integrated DVD ROM disk drive that can be used to play audio and video CDs, audio and video DVDs and navigation media. It is also possible to play audio data in MP3 format.

DVD changer
The audio functions can be extended by using an additional DVD changer (with code (814) DVD changer) integrated in the COMAND controller unit.
