GF82.85-P-0003SXJ Cockpit Management and Data System (COMAND), Function

GF82.85-P-0003SXJ Cockpit Management And Data System (COMAND), Function
- with CODE (498) Japan version

General
The COMAND system mainly consists of the following 3 control units:
^ COMAND controller unit (A40/3)
Controls the functions of the COMAND system including integrated hard disk, PCMCIA drive and DVD changer
^ Front central operating unit (A40/9) Is the main operating unit of the COMAND system
^ COMAND display (A40/8)
Is the display unit of the COMAND system

The control units communicate via different data bus systems and discrete lines with each other.

The COMAND system contains the following functions:
^ Audio functions
Radio (supports Vehicle Information and Communication System (VICS)), CD, audio DVD, music register
^ Communication functions
Telephone, e-mail, Bluetooth, Internet
^ Navigation functions
Destination-oriented navigation, voice output, dynamic route guidance with VICS
^ Video functions
Video DVD, TV, backup camera
^ Voice control system (VCS [SBS])
^ Electronic Toll Collection System (ETC)

Operation
The functions of the COMAND controller unit can be used as follows:
^ Via the buttons and controls of the front central operating unit and the COMAND display
^ Via the buttons of the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) and the instrument cluster (A1)

The following systems can be centrally operated with the aid of the front central operating unit:
^ Audio system
^ Communications System
^ Navigation system
^ Video system
^ VCS
^ Rear entertainment system (partial functions) (model 221) With code (864) Rear entertainment system

Partial functions of the following systems can be operated with the aid of the MFL:
^ Audio system
^ Communications System
^ Navigation system
^ VCS

All button operations on the MFL are initially processed by the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster links the incoming pushbutton operations with the current menu setting in the multifunction display (A1p13) and, where applicable, it then transmits a corresponding message via the central CAN to the COMAND controller unit.

COMAND data bus systems
The digital components of the COMAND system are networked via a data bus system, over which control commands and useful information are transmitted between the individual system components.
The individual component operate with various data formats and they have different request in terms of transmission rate and reliability. Thus, different data bus systems are installed.
The COMAND controller unit represents the interface between the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) and the central CAN, as well as between the MOST and the telematics CAN.

The following data bus systems are part of the COMAND system:
^ MOST
Data between the MOST components are exchanged via the MOST. Both control data as well as the audio signals are transmitted.
^ Central CAN
The data and information transfer between the COMAND controller unit, the instrument cluster, and the central gateway control unit (N93) takes place via the central CAN.
^ Telematics CAN
The data transfer between the COMAND controller unit, the COMAND display and the front central operating unit takes place via the telematics CAN.

VCS
The voice control enables the user to be relieved during a journey and provide him/her with access to a series of functions, without diverting attention from the traffic situation. Furthermore, this function should enable the driver to intuitively operate the system. The VCS [SBS] is controlled via the software integrated into the COMAND controller unit. Pressing the VCS [SBS] on button (S111s4) on the MFL activates the voice control, while pressing the "Back" and VCS [SBS] off button (S110s4) deactivates it. An acoustic signal is emitted after activation has taken place. The following functions can be controlled via the VCS:
^ Telephone
^ E-mail
^ Audio and video
^ Navigation
^ TTS (Text-To-Speech)

Help function of the VCS [SBS] (phonetic spelling)
In addition to the number and name, the phonetic spelling of the name is also stored in the telephone book of the portable CTEL (A34/6). If the portable CTEL phonebook contents are transferred to the COMAND controller unit, then all the phonebook entries are available immediately, also for the voice control system.
