GF82.85-P-0003SX Cockpit Management and Data System (COMAND), Function

GF82.85-P-0003SX Cockpit Management And Data System (COMAND), Function
- except CODE (498) Japan version

General
The COMAND system mainly consists of the following 3 control units:
^ COMAND controller unit (A40/3)
Controls the functions of the COMAND system
^ Front central operating unit (A40/9)
Is the main operating unit of the COMAND system
^ COMAND display (A40/8)
Is the display unit of the COMAND system

The control units communicate via different data bus systems and discrete lines with each other.

The COMAND system contains the following functions:
^ Audio functions CD, DVD, radio, MP3
^ Communication functions
With code (386) Preinstallation for telephone "Handy", UPCI system or with code (494) USA version or with code (389) Mobile phone preinstallation with universal interface, USA/ Canada Telephone, SMS, e-mail, Bluetooth
^ Navigation functions
With code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code (494) USA version
^ Video functions
Video DVD, TV (with code (863) Digital/analog TV tuner)

Operation
The functions of the COMAND controller unit can be used as follows:
^ Via the buttons and controls of the front central operating unit and the COMAND display
^ Via the buttons of the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) and the instrument cluster (A1)

The following systems can be centrally operated with the aid of the front central operating unit:
^ Audio system
^ Communications System
With code (386) Preinstallation for telephone "Handy", UPCI system or with code (494) USA version or with code (389) Mobile phone preinstallation with universal interface, USA/ Canada
^ Navigation system
With code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code (494) USA version
^ Video system
^ Rear entertainment system (partial functions) (model 221) With code (864) Rear entertainment system

Partial functions of the following systems can be operated with the aid of the MFL:
^ Audio system
^ Communications System
With code (386) Preinstallation for telephone "Handy", UPCI system or with code (494) USA version or with code (389) Mobile phone preinstallation with universal interface, USA/ Canada
^ Navigation system
With code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation) or with code (494) USA version

All button operations on the MFL are initially processed by the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster links the incoming pushbutton operations with the current menu setting in the multifunction display (A1p13) and, where applicable, it then transmits a corresponding message via the central CAN to the COMAND controller unit.

COMAND data bus systems
The digital components of the COMAND system are networked via a data bus system, over which control commands and useful information are transmitted between the individual system components.
The individual component operate with various data formats and they have different request in terms of transmission rate and reliability. Thus, different data bus systems are installed.

The COMAND controller unit represents the interface between the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST) and the central CAN, as well as between the MOST and the telematics CAN.

The following data bus systems are part of the COMAND system:
^ MOST
Data between the MOST components are exchanged via the MOST. Both control data as well as the audio signals are transmitted.
^ Central CAN
The data and information transfer between the COMAND controller unit, the instrument cluster, and the central gateway control unit (N93) takes place via the central CAN.
^ Telematics CAN
The data transfer between the COMAND controller unit, the COMAND display and the front central operating unit takes place via the telematics CAN.
