MODEL 203.0 /2 /7 as of 24.4.04
- with CODE (530) COMAND APS USA (with navigation system)
- up to Model Year 8

Activating navigation
If the driver's door is opened the navigation is activated automatically via the controller area network bus class B (interior) (CAN-B) . This activation process may be accompanied by barely audible noises coming from the multi-standard disk drive integrated in the navigation processor. The display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) remains switched off. If, after this, there is no status change at the transmitter key (A8/1) (e.g. circuit 15R ON), the navigation will remain activated for t = 30 min.

Activating the overall system
All other subsystems are activated by inserting the transmitter key (A8/1) in the electronic ignition switch control unit (N73) in position 0 (circuit 15C ON).

When the key is turned to position 1 (circuit 15R ON), the display is switched on if the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) was switched on before the last time the transmitter key (A8/1) was removed. The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) is now operational. The system which was active before it was last switched off (e.g. radio) is switched on and the corresponding basic menu is displayed. If the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) was switched off for more than t = 30 min, a warning menu is displayed with notes on using the system.

Conduct when pushing "ON" button
The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) can also be switched on when the transmitter key is removed (A8/1) by pressing the "ON" button. All functions are then available for t = 30 minutes After the 30 minutes have expired, the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) switches itself off automatically. If the system has switched off after 30 minutes, the system can be switched on again by pressing the ON button. The cycle then starts again from the beginning.

Switch off behavior
The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) switches itself off when the transmitter key (A8/1) (circuit 15C OFF) is removed. Then the navigation system run-on time of t = 30 min starts (standby mode). During this run-on time all the important locating parameters remain stored. The run-on time for the audio systems can be set; this is done when the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) is installed at the plant. Furthermore, the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) is always in standby mode when CAN-B is active.

Pressing the "DISP" button only causes the screen to switch between the day, night and off modes.

Switch off characteristics at undervoltage
The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) continuously monitors the battery voltage. Depending on the voltage value, the system will behave as follows:

If the battery voltage drops below 11.5 volts (battery warning range), a message appears in the display requesting that the engine be started. If the engine is not started, a further warning follows after t = 3 min. indicating that approx. 10 seconds remain to start the engine before the system switches itself off. In this case switching on the engine prevents the system from being automatically shut down. However, if the system has switched itself off and the voltage increases to more than 11.5 V again, the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) does not automatically switch itself back on.

If a system has been shut down it can still be switched back on again manually. However, the warning procedure occurs each time until the fault is repaired.

Battery voltage below 9.5 V (undervoltage)
The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) is automatically put into a defined standby condition in which only the battery voltage is monitored. In addition to this the current operating status is stored.

The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) cannot be operated or accessed using STAR DIAGNOSIS when it is in this condition. Communication with external components does not take place.
