Remove/Install Transfer Case







Remove

1 Remove hot film mass air flow sensor

Danger:
- Lethal injuries are possible if vehicle slips off of lifting platform
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer

2 Raise vehicle
3 Detach lower engine compartment paneling
4 Detach exhaust shielding plate (41) for the front propeller shaft behind the transfer case
5 Remove exhaust bracket (44)
6 Detach transmission ground (W49) from transfer case (16)
7 02-Remove right probe, downstream of TWC (G3/6)
8 Mark front axle gear propeller shaft (70) in relation to transfer case flange
9 Detach front axle gear propeller shaft (70) from transfer case (16)
10 Detach front propeller shaft from transfer case (16)

NOTE: The flexible coupling remains on the propeller shaft

11 Loosen fitted sleeves of flexible coupling and push back propeller shaft
12 Detach shift rod (50) of automatic transmission

NOTE: To detach the locking device (50a) press upwards until the bolt of the shift rod can be moved outwards

13 Detach reinforcement bridge (49)
14 Detach rear exhaust system (48) at the rubber mounts, lower slightly and tie securely
15 Support automatic transmission with assembly lift and transmission platform
16 Remove rear engine cross member (42)

NOTE: Remove rear engine mount if necessary

17 Lower automatic transmission slightly.
18 Detach transfer case (16) from automatic transmission

NOTE: Four nuts and seven bolts.

Install

CAUTION: Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts

19 Attach transfer case (16) to automatic transmission

NOTE: Four nuts and seven bolts.

20 Check and correct oil level of transfer case
21 Install rear engine crossmember (42) with bracket
22 Remove assembly lift and transmission platform
23 Attach rear exhaust system (48) to the rubber mounts
24 Attach rear reinforcement bridge (49)
25 Attach front propeller shaft to transfer case
26 Attach ground for transmission (W49) to transfer case (16)
27 Attach exhaust shielding plate (41) for front propeller shaft behind the transfer case (16)
28 Mount exhaust bracket (44)

CAUTION: Check threaded plates (44a) and replace if necessary.

29 02-lnstall right probe, downstream of three way catalytic converter (TWC) (G3/6)
30 Attach front axle gear propeller shaft (70) to transfer case flange

NOTE: Observe marking.

31 Attach shift rod (50) to automatic transmission
32 Install lower engine-compartment encapsulation panel
33 Install hot film mass air flow sensor
