MODEL 220.175 (S-GUARD) (M.Y. 2001 and 2002)
INSPECTION OF VIN TAG LOCATED BELOW LEFT HAND SIDE OF WINDSHIELD
This campaign has been initiated because DCAG has determined a potential noncompliance exists in the vehicle identification tag. It may be possible that the VIN tag plate may not be visible or incorrectly mounted. (Figure 1).
NOTE:
A MB USA field representative will contact dealers to arrange for delivery of VIN Tag Plate and schedule customer appointment. Field representative must be present when the VIN Tag Plate installation occurs.
Additionally, please review the Effective Serial Number Range Chart below, to determine if the vehicle is one of approximately 40 vehicles affected by this recall campaign.

Checking/affixing VIN tag plate procedure
1. Prior to performing this Service Campaign, please check VMI to insure the vehicle is involved and to determine if the vehicle has been previously repaired. Remove and destroy any previously mounted VIN tag plate, while performing the repair steps noted below.
2. Carefully remove trim piece from A-pillar, see WIS document: AR68.30-P-4050MC
NOTE:
protect windshield and dashboard before performing step 3 below.
3. Determine location of the VIN tag Plate on the dashboard (2, Figures 2 and 3) and recess of the A-pillar (3, Figure 2 and Figure 3) as shown.
NOTE:
the VIN sticker as located on the VIN tag plate must face forward so that it is visible from outside the front windshield on the driver's side of the vehicle.
4. Carefully center punch the fastening point location (1 Figure 3) for the VIN tag plate on the A-pillar and drill a 4 mm hole as shown (1 Figure 3).
5. Mount the VIN tag Plate with a steel rivet (supplied with VIN plate, part number: A 003 990 34 97, also see Standard Service Equipment Program Catalog for appropriate/approved rivet gun) to the A-pillar as shown, ensuring that the VIN tag Plate lays in the recess and on the dash board as seen in Figures 2 and 3, and as described in "NOTE" above.
6. Re-install removed trim piece onto A-pillar. See WIS document: AR68.30-P-4050MC
