Seat Belt: Service and Repair

R12/2 Right front ETR squib

WARNING: Uncontrolled firing of airbags, side airbags and emergency tensioning retractors poses an accident hazard. Testing and installation should be accomplished or supervised only by properly trained personnel. Store airbags and side airbags with opening surface pointing up, do not expose to temperatures above 100 °C. Interrupt electric circuit when working on units.

1. Disconnect ground lead from battery.
2. Remove ignition key.
3. Unscrew screws (1, 3 each).
4. Remove cover (2).
5. Unscrew screws (3).
6. Unscrew screw(4)
7. Remove cover(5).
8. Pull off edge guard (6).
9. Fold cover (7) back.
10. Unscrew bolt (8) on seat belt end fitting. (For installation use special tool 001 589 66 21 00 - see torque specification below)
11. Unscrew bolt (9) on upper belt guide fitting. (For installation use special tool 001 589 66 21 00 - see torque specification below)
12. Disconnect connector on emergency tensioning retractor squib (R12/1, R12/2).
13. Unscrew bolt (10) on automatic belt retractor. (For installation use special tool 001 589 66 21 00 - see torque specification below)
14. Remove automatic belt retractor (11).

WARNING: Do not disassemble automatic belt retractor. Accident hazard from tensioned spring. Never use oil or grease to eliminate noises. Opening automatic retractors voids warranty.

Installation Note: Pay attention to different belt retractor versions (left/right) and ensure that retractor is properly seated in arresting mechanism.

15. Render airbags, side airbags and emergency tensioning retractors unusable.
16. Perform diagnosis. See System Diagnosis. Testing and Inspection
17. Reinstall in opposite order. Observe installation notes.

Torque Specifications:
Bolt on seat belt end fitting 35 Nm
Bolt in front upper belt guide fitting 35 Nm
Bolt in front automatic belt retractor 35 Nm
