Date: March 1999

Order No.: P-SI-MBNA-82.70/118

Supersedes: -

Group: 82

SUBJECT:
MODEL 220
MODEL YEAR 2000 (VEHICLES UP TO VIN A028066)
TELEPHONE 25-PIN D-SUB CONNECTOR MODIFICATION

Note:
This Service Information is provided as a supplement to Work Instructions no. 416 included in the Service Information P-SI-MBNA-82.64/116 describing the installation of CD-changer and cellular telephone (CTEL) system for model 220 vehicles.

Vehicles produced up to the above referenced VIN range may contain a vehicle cellular telephone harness in which the 25-pin D-Sub connector at the rear of the vehicle is improperly assembled. This improperly assembled connector prevents the 25-pin mating connector on the telephone "Y" cable from being connected due to improper alignment between the connector keying tabs.

Warning:
Due to the tolerances involved in harness assembly, DO NOT attempt to repair the vehicle side harness. Rotating the 25-pin connector in it's housing may result in immediate and/or latent damage to the small gauge wires used in the construction of the telephone harness and may cause complete D2B ring failure in the vehicle.

In order to install the telephone in an affected vehicle, perform the following rework:

Figure 1:

1. Locate the 25-Pin "Y" cable in the telephone kit (p/n Q 6 82 0389)

2. Using a 3/32" (2.5 mm) Hex wrench, remove the two screws (arrows, Figure 1) securing the "U" shaped metal bracket to the male 25-pin connector on the harness

Figure 2:

3. Rotate the bracket 180° on the connector. Refer to the molded "keys" on the connector bracket. After rotation the "keys" will be on the same side as the connector 12-pin row (arrows, Figure 2).

4. Reinstall the two hex screws; DO NOT over tighten these screws.

6. Proceed normally with telephone install.
