Differential Case: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Drain rear axle oil
2. Remove rear axle center assembly (53) [1][2]Procedures
3. Clamp rear axle center assembly in support as follows:





- Install rear axle center assembly in assembly stand tool No. 129 589 00 31 00 (054), or equivalent, and clamp securely with support parts (054a) part 15 and (054b) part 09
4. Remove end cover (54), discard collared bolts
5. Pull off locking ring (30), discard locking ring
6. Pull out connecting flange (33)





7. Press out radial seal ring (32, 32a) using a suitable pry tool

INSTALLATION
- Install in reverse sequence, noting the following information:
- Check contact surface for radial seal ring on connecting flange, if seriously worn replace connecting flange





- Using driver tool No. 140 589 06 15 00 (032b), or equivalent, replace radial seal ring (32), coat outside diameter and sealing lip with suitable hypoid or universal hypoid gear oil
- Check and adjust axial play of connecting flange as follows:





- Check axial play between connecting flange (33) and differential side gear (17)
- The axial play must be within the specified tolerance range of 0.003-0.30 mm
- If necessary, fit a spacer ring (31) of greater or lesser thickness
- Locking rings are available in thicknesses ranging from 2.0 mm to 3.4 mm in 0.05 mm graduations
- Install NEW locking ring
- Clean rear cover sealing surface and coat with Hylomar sealing compound part No. 001 989 25 20, or equivalent
- Install NEW collared screws (56b) for rear cover, tighten to 50 Nm
- Install NEW rear axle vent (55), then tighten to 30 Nm
- Fill differential with 1.3 liters of suitable differential fluid
