Differential Case: Service and Repair






NOTE: Numbers in parentheses ( ) indicate a component or tool in the associated illustration.

REMOVAL
1. Drain rear axle oil
2. Remove differential center assembly. Removal and Replacement





3. Using mounting rack (054) tool No. 129 589 00 31 00, or equivalent, clamp center assembly securely with part 01 (054c) and part 06 (054c) of support set tool No. 140 589 40 63 00, or equivalents
4. Remove end cover (54)
- Discard collared bolts





5. Using removal and installation tool No. 116 589 01 62 00, or equivalent, remove locking ring (30)
- Discard locking ring
6. Pull out connecting flange (33, 33a, 33b)
- Check contact surface for the radial seal ring on the connecting flange, if there are signs of wear replace the connecting flange





7. On models with Acceleration Slip Regulation (ASR) use puller tool No. 001 589 50 33 00 and collet chuck tool No. 140 589 00 34 00, or equivalents, to pull out deep-groove ball bearing





8. On all models using a suitable tool, pry out seal (32a)

INSTALLATION
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following information:
- Replace rear axle breather, tighten to: 30 Nm





- Coat sealing lips of seal with a suitable hypoid gear oil, then using driver tool No. 140 589 10 15 00, or equivalent seat seal in housing





- On models with ASR, using a suitable press tube, push deep-groove ball bearing into place on connecting flange
- On all models use a new selective locking ring to retain connecting flange to differential side gear





- Check and adjust connecting flange axial play as follows:
- Measure axial play between connecting flange (33 and differential side gear (17)
- If not to specification of (0.03 to 0.30 mm) choose a new selective lock ring
- Lock rings are available in thicknesses ranging from 1.40 to 2.70 mm in 0.50 mm graduations
- Clean sealing surfaces for end cover and coat with Hylomar sealer part No. 001 989 25 20, or equivalent
- Use new collared bolts to retain end cover and tighten to: 50 Nm
