Recall - Driver's Airbag Defective: Overview

Campaign No. 1999110004

SERVICE: GROUP 00 OF SERVICE INFORMATION BINDER
PARTS: GROUP I OF INFORMATION - PARTS & ACCESSORIES BINDER

January 2000

TO: ALL MERCEDES-BENZ CENTERS

SUBJECT:
MODEL 129, MODEL YEAR 1997 THROUGH 1998 REPLACEMENT OF DRIVER'S AIRBAG

Attached is a sample copy of a letter which owners of the affected vehicles will receive in the near future.

This campaign is initiated because OCAG has determined that the driver's airbag module may corrode at the ignitor filament (squib), possibly resulting in an unintentional deployment of the driver's airbag. Therefore, the driver's airbag must be replaced with an updated driver's airbag (refer to Procedure).

After completing the recall campaign procedure, please fill out the recall label in ink, noting the numbers of the recall campaign and your retailer code (the recall label will be included with the air bag). The recall label should be affixed on the driver's side A-pillar near the door hinge.

The affected 4402 vehicles are within the chassis end number range listed below.
Prior to performing the campaign, perform a VMI to determine whether the subject vehicle is affected.
