Replacement







NOTE: Numbers in parentheses ( ) indicate a component or tool in the associated illustration.

Removal
1. Remove cylinder head (87), refer to Cylinder Head Replacement. [1][2]Procedures
2. Remove camshafts. [1][2]Procedures
3. Place cylinder head (87) onto assembly base (24)
- Place insert (25) with the appropriate side into assembly base (24) with the direction of travel arrow (26) facing forward
- Place cylinder head (87) onto assembly base (24) with its front end facing the direction of travel arrow (26) bolt tight with a cylinder head bolt (23) at the front and rear.
- The cylinder head (87) can be installed with intake manifold and exhaust manifold.
4. Bolt on supporting bar (2) with slide (7)
- Bolt supporting bar (2) onto camshaft bearings 1 and 5 or 6 and 10; use collar bolts for camshaft bearing caps for this step
5. Remove hydraulic valve clearance compensation elements (3) (bucket tappets) at the relevant cylinder
6. Attach lever compression tool (9) together with thrust piece (5) into slide (7), align
- Position thrust piece (5) vertically against valve spring retainer (15) and align parallel to slide (7).
- Fix thrust piece (5) in position with bolt (8) to prevent it from turning.
7. Remove upper valve spring retainer (15) and valve spring (17)
- Compress valve spring (17).
- Remove valve collets (14) with tweezers (6), magnetic pin or magnetic finger.
- The valve springs of the inlet and exhaust valves are identical.





8. Replace valve stem seals as follows:
a. Use suitable pliers (1) to pull off valve stem seals (86).
b. Examine surface of valve stems for roughness and formation of bum (visual inspection or check with nail).
- Replace valve with rough stem surface or burrs. Service and Repair
c. Fit protective sleeve (2) onto valve stem.
d. Oil valve stem seals (86).
e. Use suitable assembly drift (3) to press on valve stem seals (86).
9. Remove lower valve spring retainer (20)
10. Examine upper and lower valve spring retainers (15 and 20)
- Check valve spring retainers for scoring, replace if necessary

WARNING:
^ Risk of explosion and poisoning from sodium-filled valve melting or from improper handling.
^ Risk of injury from burns and caustic injuries to areas of the skin from contact with sodium.
^ Do not open sodium-filled valves; wear protective gloves and eye protection if necessary, if valves damaged.


Inspection
- Remove cylinder head (87) from assembly base (24); remove valves
- Examine surface of the valve stems for roughness and formation of burrs (visual inspection or check with nail).
- Replace valves with rough stem surface or burrs.

Installation
Install in the reverse order, noting the following:
- Tighten Bolt Of Camshaft Bearing Caps To: 21 Nm
