SUBJECT:
MODELS 202.022/028
SEALING FLANGE CONNECTION OF FRONT AXLE CARRIER AT FRAME RAILS

Effective Serial Number Range

In vehicles within the effective serial number shown, MB anti-corrosion wax, part no. 000 986 33 70, must be applied at the flange connection of the frame rail and front axle carrier (shaded areas, Figure 3).

CAUTION!
Do not perform work if engine is hot. Allow engine to cool down.

Wear eye protection and appropriate protective clothing when spraying anti-corrosion wax.

Since the disassembly/assembly procedure varies between models 202.022/028, please review procedure completely before beginning work.

Procedure

1. Position vehicle in workstall with lift.

2. Open hood to vertical position.

STEPS 3-4 MODEL 202.022 ONLY!

3. Disconnect hot film MAF sensor wire connector (arrow, Figure 1), from hot film MAF sensor (B2/5).

4. Loosen rear hose clamp on intake pipe boot and then unclasp (2 clasps) hot film MAF sensor (B2/5) from intake pipe. Finally remove hot film MAF sensor and carefully lay aside (arrows, Figure 1).

CAUTION!
Cover up both open ends of the air intake pipe to prevent anything from falling into intake pipe. Do not start engine with hot film MAF sensor connector disconnected, as this will enter a fault into the DTC memory of the engine control module (N3/4) (HFM-SFI).

5. Locate and then remove 3 bolts (4 and 5, Figure 3) which secure the right frame rail heat shield (6, Figure 3) to the right side frame rail.

STEP 6 MODEL 202.022 ONLY!

6. Unclip O2S (G3/2) sensor wire from right frame rail heat shield.

7. Using spray gun from above carefully spray the shaded areas where the front axle carrier meets the right hand frame rail (arrow 1, Figure 3). Continue by spraying the entire right hand side of the engine compartment.

8. On the left hand side, using the spray gun from above, apply anti-corrosion wax to the shaded areas where the front axle carrier meets the left hand frame rail (arrow 1, Figure 3). Continue by spraying the entire left hand side of the engine compartment.

9. Lift vehicle.

10. Remove lower engine compartment panel and lay aside.

11. Remove heat shield above steering idler arm to allow access for spray gun from below.

12. Using spray gun from below, carefully apply anti-corrosion wax to both sides of the frame rail (arrows 2 and 3, Figure 3) on the right frame rail. Repeat the anti-corrosion application on the left frame rail as well.

13. Reinstall heat shield for steering idler arm.

14. Reinstall lower engine compartment panel.

15. Lower vehicle.

16. Reinstall the previously removed heat shield to the right frame rail.

STEPS 17-19 MODEL 202.022 ONLY!

17. Clip O2S 1 (G3/2) sensor wire back onto heat shield.

18. Reinstall the hot film MAF sensor (B2/5), paying attention to the rubber locator tab (arrow, Figure 2) on the intake pipe boot and then tighten the rear hose clamp. Finish by closing the two clasps.

19. Reconnect the hot film MAF sensor wire connector to the hot film MAF sensor (B2/5).

20. Close hood.
