Cellular Phone - Handset Installation

REF. NO. MBNA 82/64

TO: OUR MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS

DATE: September 1992

SUBJECT:
MODEL 140 MODEL YEAR 1993
INSTALLATION OF STANDARD SIZE HANDSET FOR CELLULAR TELEPHONE

Beginning with model year 1993, all model 140 vehicles are pre-wired for installation of a small handset in the front armrest. The new installation kit, part number Q 6 82 0070, is presently in short supply. However, to provide for a smooth transition to this next generation telephone, the standard size handset used until now in vehicles without rear compartment air conditioner, installation kit Q 6 82 0069, can continue to be installed in the console storage compartment of MY'93 cars until the new version handset is available. To do so, the pre-wired harness from the in-dash control unit to the armrest extension harness must be re-routed to the console storage compartment.

Procedure:

1. Remove gear selector wooden cover (see SMS Body - assembly jobs I, Job 68-231).

2. Remove console storage compartment bottom cover.

3. Locate the armrest extension harness female connector (X39/14) and disconnect it from the in-dash control unit male harness connector. Do not disconnect connector X39/10, which connects the in-dash control unit to the transceiver.

4. Route male connector from in-dash control unit into the console storage compartment.

5. Cover female connector with electrical tape and place it its original position.

6. Replace gear selector wooden cover.

7. Install the standard size handset and cradle into the console storage compartment according to S.I. MBNA 82/55a and accompanying Work Instructions no. 264, Section B.
