SUBJECT:
MODEL 140 REPLACEMENT OF LOWER CONTROL ARM REAR BUSHING WITH HYDRAULIC BUSHING
Note:
This Work Instruction describes replacement of rear control arm rubber bushings with hydraulic bushings (4c, Figure 1). Until Group 33 Service Microfiche is available for Model 140, refer to: Service Microfiche, Front Axle, Model 129, Group 33.
1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
2. Remove rear engine compartment lower encapsulation panel (Figure 2).
3. Compress and remove front springs, using spring compressor 000 589 46 31 00 together with spring compressor plates 140 589 07 63 00.
4. Remove nut and eccentric bolt (20 and 20b, Figure 3). Remove nut (19b, Figure 3) and slide eccentric bolt (19, Figure 3) as far forward as possible. Pull the lower control arm down from the front axle cross member rear bracket and wedge lower control arm down with a suitable block (013, Figure 5, next page). During reassembly obtain new eccentric bolt nuts (19b and 20b, Figure 3). Tightening torque: 150 N-m.
5. Drive the aluminum end washer from the rear rubber bushing with a suitable tool (Figure 4).
6. Remove rear rubber bushing from the lower control arm with remover/installer 140 589 03 43 00 (012g, 012h, Figure 5).
7. Install the hydraulic bushing into the control arm from the trailing side. Line up the small rectangular indentation in the bushing shoulder (arrow, Figures 6, 7 and 8) with the welded seam on the control arm (see figures 7 and 8 for correct alignment). Unlike the three larger notches, this small rectangular indentation does not extend through the bushing shoulder.
Warning:
Do not use oil or grease on the hydraulic bushing. Grease or oil could cause deterioration of the bushing rubber and eventual reduction or loss of steering control.
8. Using remover/installer 140 589 03 43 00 (012g, 012j, Figure 7), press the hydraulic bushing (4g) into the control arm to a point approx. 1 in. before the shoulder.
9. Attach three-arm fitting (012h, Figure 8) in place of the solid sleeve (012j, Figure 7) and press the hydraulic bushing (4g) to the shoulder.
10. When reinstalling control arm, do not tighten nuts on eccentric bolts until the vehicle's weight is resting on its wheels and the suspension is at normal road ride height.
11. After installation, align front wheels (Service Microfiche, Chassis Alignment, Model 140, Group 40, Job 40-320).
