Rocker Arm Assembly: Service and Repair

1. Disable airbag system, refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts. Restraints and Safety Systems
2. Remove air cleaner assembly, then the cylinder head cover.
3. Disconnect electrical connectors from ignition distributor. Turn crankshaft in normal direction of rotation until No. 1 piston is at TDC of compression stroke.
4. Mark relationship between camshaft sprocket(s) and timing chain for assembly reference.
5. Carefully remove cap, seal and compression spring from chain tensioner.
6. On models equipped with automatic level control, remove pressure oil pump by loosening bolts indicated by arrows, Fig. 1. Position pump aside with oil lines connected.
7. Remove camshaft sprocket attaching bolt and sprocket. On models equipped with automatic level control, the drive sleeve for the pressure oil pump must also be removed from camshaft.
8. Fully back out all valve adjusting screws, then disconnect oil line from cylinder head.
9. Remove rocker arm bearing bracket attaching bolts and the brackets.
10. On models equipped with hydraulic valve lifters, remove ball sockets.
11. Remove rocker arm shafts and the rocker arms from brackets.
12. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Tighten cylinder head oil line attaching bolts in a crisscross pattern.
b. Install rocker arm bearing brackets so that oil line mountings face rearward and code numbers on brackets are at the right and aligned with number cast on cylinder head.
c. On models equipped with hydraulic valve lifters, install bearing bracket No. 1 first, then the camshaft sprocket and brackets No. 3, 4 and 2 in that order.
d. Install camshaft sprocket with wide flange facing camshaft.
e. Tighten chain tensioner closing nut.
f. On models equipped with automatic level control, tighten pressure oil pump bolts.
g. Ensure valve timing marks are properly aligned.
