Front Rotors
Brake disc (61)
a) Check wear between cover plate and brake caliper or, with brake pads removed, in pad shaft with caliper gauge (035) 124 589 OS 1900.
Renew brake discs according to condition.
b) Perform visual check.
It is not necessary to renew ventilated brake discs with hairline cracks up to a length of 25 mm, which can result from extreme stress. Renew brake discs with gaping cracks, with scoring deeper than 0.5 mm or when the wear limit has been reached.
Brake caliper (31)
- Remove, install.
- Hang brake caliper on body with suitable hook
- DO NOT subject brake hose to tension
Front wheel hub (69)
- Remove, install.
Brake disc (61)
- Screw off of wheel hub (69), screw on.
- Renew self-locking Allen bolts (73), 115 Nm.
Cover plate
- Check mount on stub axle.
Wheel bearing axial play
- Check, adjust if required.
A Brake disc, fixed caliper up to 08/85
B Brake disc, floating caliper
On vehicles with fixed calipers installed up to 08/85 only install ventilated brake discs with diameter of 278 mm marked with a groove on the circumference.
The brake discs on vehicles with floating calipers installed up to 08/85 have a diameter of 286 mm.
Since 09/85 all model 126 vehicles have brake discs with a diameter of 300 mm.
Installation Note
Before installing brake discs remove any rust present on the brake disc flange or on the front wheel hub (69).
Lightly coat fitted seat of front wheel flange with heat-resistant permanent lubricant (Molykote paste "U", Molykote paste G Rapid, Liqui-Moly paste 36).
Replacement brake discs are protected against corrosion with nitro-cellulose paint. For this reason the corrosion protection on these discs must be removed and the discs degreased before installation. This can be accomplished best with a high-pressure hot water cleaning unit. Observe safety instructions of unit manufacturer.
Note on checking wheel bearing axial play
If the pedal travel differs during the test drive (particularly after driving through a curve), check the wheel bearing axial play at the front wheel hubs (33-0300). Measure lateral runout of brake discs at outer diameter. For this purpose use dial gauge holder (033) 363 589 02 21 00 and dial gauge Al DIN 878 (032). Replace brake discs as pair if lateral runout is > 0.12 mm.
