REF. NO. MBNA 82/31
SUBJECT: MODIFIED HEAT EXCHANGER HEATED WINDSHIELD WASHER SYSTEM
1. VEHICLES IN WHICH HEAT EXCHANGER WAS NOT INSTALLED
2. VEHICLES PRODUCED WITH THE PREVIOUS TYPE TUBE HEAT EXCHANGER MODEL 126
As of August 1988, a modified heat exchanger with tubing made of a chromiumnickel steel composition (previously aluminum) was introduced into production. The new material will reduce the possibility of corrosion related damage.
1. Vehicles in which the heat exchanger was not installed.
Between June and August 1988 production, the heat exchanger (located in the windshield washer system reservoir) was temporarily not installed due to supply problems. These vehicles are listed in the table below.
Effective Serial Number/Vehicles without heat exchanger
Model Chassis End Number Range
From (June) To (August)
126 418949 428201
Vehicles within the chassis end number range should be inspected during the next service visit for installation of the new heat exchanger. On those vehicles without the heat echanger, the coolant supply and return hoses are connected together with a U-shaped connecting tube. The connecting tube is secured to the component compartment wall with a clip, and the openings in the reservoir lid are closed with plugs.
Procedure
1.1 Loosen cap on coolant expansion tank. 1.2 Unplug connctors from windshield washer pumps and from level indicator switch. 1.3 Disconnect hoses from washer pumps. 1.4 Remove windshield washer reservoir and remove the washer pump and low level indicator switch from within the reservoir. 1.5 Remove plugs (2) from reservoir cover and insert new ones
1.6 Push pipes of heat exchanger through grommets in cover.
Note: cut off the guide on new heat exchanger thermostat and install heat exchanger into the reservoir.
1.7 Install washer pump and level indicator switch in reservoir. 1.8 Install reservoir.
1.9 Release connecting U-tube from clip on compartment wall. Loosen clamps and remove U-tube.
1.10 Connect hoses to heat exchanger and tighten existing clamps. Complete installation in reverse order of removal.
1.11 Fill reservoir with suggested ratio of concentrate "S" and water or premix, depending upon season (see S.I. MBNA 82/23b, October 1987). Activate washer pump until fluid squirts from washer nozzles. 1.12 Check engine cooling system for leaks.

In case of Warranty:
Time Allowance
02-0387 Heat exchanger, subsequent installation 0.3 hrs. - 70
Damage Code (To be used only for vehicles from factory w/o heat exchanger)
86900 317 Subsequent installation of heat exchanger
2. Vehicles produced with the previous type heat exchanger
If the coolant level indicator lamp lights up on these vehicles, determine the cause. If it is determined that the cause of the leakage is due to a leaky heat exchanger, install only the modified chromium-nickel steel heat exchanger.
Procedure
2.1 Loosen cap on coolant expansion tank.
2.2 Loosen clamps (arrows) on heat exchanger hoses and remove hoses
(Figure 4).
2.3 Unplug connector from windshield washer pumps and from level indicator
switch.
2.4 Disconnect hoses from washer pumps.
2.5 Remove windshield washer reservoir and remove the heat exchanger,
washer pump, and low level indicator switch from within the reservoir.
2.6 Rinse out the reservoir and install new heat exchanger.
Note: On earlier production vehicles the heat exchanger thermostat had a guide. On all new heat exchangers the guide is to be cut off to avoid unnecessary replacement of the reservoir.
2.7 Install washer pump and level indicator switch in reservoir.
2.8 Install reservoir. Complete installation in reverse order of removal.
2.9 Fill reservoir with suggested ratio of concentrate "S" and water or
premix, depending upon season (see S.I. MBNA 82/23b, October 1987). Activate washer pump until fluid squirts from washer nozzles.
2.10 Replace coolant with new anti-freeze.
2.11 Check engine cooling system for leaks.
