Air Bag Voltage Stabilizer: Service and Repair

Special Tools (Vehicles Up To 9/87):





Type 1:

NOTE: Type 2 is distinguished by:
- Modified arrangement of red, 10-pin plug from footrest to panel situated below footrest
- Modified arrangement of voltage converter from front bulkhead pillar to panel situated below footrest.

Removal:





1. Turn ignition key to position 0, disconnect and insulate negative battery terminal
2. Remove floormat from right side of driver's footwell
3. Remove footrest from bulkhead (arrowed).





4. Disconnect red, 10-pin control unit plug under footrest.





5. Remove front right-side door sill.
6. Press off edge trim around side cladding (arrowed).
7. Pull side cladding away from front bulkhead pillar towards the rear.





8. Unscrew and remove voltage converter.
9. Disconnect plug from voltage converter.

Installation:
10. Connect plug to voltage converter.
11. Install voltage converter securely (arrowed).
12. Check system with tester, [1][2]Component Tests and General Diagnostics





13. Install side cladding on front bulkhead pillar with clips.
14. Continue installation in reverse order of removal.
15. Check system with RS/SRS control lamp (A1e15).

Type 2

Removal:
1. Turn ignition key to position "0", disconnect and insulate negative battery terminal.
2. Remove floormat from front passenger's footwell.
3. Remove screws from top of footrest, raise footrest and remove.





4. Disconnect red, 10-pin plug connector (X29/9).
5. Remove right-side door sill.
6. Press off edge trim to the right, remove side cladding from front passenger's footwell.
7. Remove the two lower panel clips.
8. Disconnect plug-connector from voltage converter (N24).

Installation:





9. Connect plug to voltage converter.
10. Install voltage converter (N24) securely.
11. Check system with tester, [1][2]Component Tests and General Diagnostics
12. Continue installation in reverse order to removal.
13. Check system with RS/SRS control lamp (A1e15).
