Fig. 22 Bearing cap, steering worm & related components:





1. Inspect steering worm and steering nut, as follows:
a. Check ball paths on steering worm (3). If traces of wear are shown, replace steering, Fig. 22.
b. Remove sealing ring (30) and O-ring (29) from steering worm, Fig. 22.

2. Check piston and steering nut, as follows:
a. Remove sealing ring (41) and O-ring (40) working piston (5). Press outer race of axial tapered ball bearing (33) from piston, Figs. 19 and 23.

3. Inspect pitman shaft, as follows:
a. Check pitman shaft (2) for wear at bearing points and for distortion or other damage. Replace pitman shaft, if required, Fig. 24.
4. Inspect steering case, as follows:
a. Check needle bushing in steering case for wear. If required, pull out needle bushing with conventional puller.
5. Inspect housing cover, as follows:
a. Check needle bushing (52) for wear. Completely replace housing cover, if the needle bushing is damaged.

6. Inspect bearing insert, as follows:
a. Check needle bushing (52) for wear. Completely replace bearing insert (9), if the needle bushing is damaged, Figs. 12 and 13.

7. Check control valve, as follows:
a. Check reaction piston (12) in control valve (6) for smooth operation. If required, remove reaction piston after removing locking ring (16) and clean, Fig. 21. Do not interchange springs (67) and compensating washers (66) of both reaction pistons.
