Compressor Shaft Seal: Service and Repair


Removal
1. Remove spring plate and clutch. SEE Compressor Clutch. Compressor Clutch

A/C Compressor Shaft Seal Retaining Ring:





2. Remove retaining ring (10) for shaft seal.

A/C Copressor Slip Ring On Slip Ring Tool:





3. Remove slip ring (12) with disassembling and assembling tool.

A/C Compressor Shaft Seal On Tool:





4. Remove shaft seal (13) by means of disassembling and assembling tool. Press on tool, then turn tool to the right to grip projection on shaft seal. Remove shaft seal by pulling up.
5. Take out 0-ring (11) from inside of bore in housing cover. A wire bent in the shape of a hook may be used.

Installation
1. Check for parts of the old shaft seal left in bore of housing cover. Clean bore before installing new seal.
2. Immerse new sealing parts into clean, cold-flowing oil. Place 0-ring (11) into groove of housing cover.
3. Insert shaft seal (13) into tool and slip on shaft. Turn tool to the right until the shaft seal engages in the shaft. Turn tool to the left for disengaging it from shaft seal and removing tool.
4. Insert slip ring (12) with tool into bore up to contact with shaft seal. Make sure that 0-ring (11) is not pushed out of groove.

Warning: The sealing surface of slip ring (12) must be protected against any damage.

5. Insert locking ring (10) with its flat face down to the point when it rests on slip ring. Then press with locking pliers or a screw driver on locking ring so that it springs into groove.
6. Install clutch and spring plate. SEE Compressor Clutch Compressor Clutch
