SUBJECT: VALVE SPRING COMPRESSOR ENGINE 102


The previous valve spring compressor (tool no. 102 589 00 61 00) for engine 102 has been replaced by a valve spring compressor (tool no. 601 589 02 61 00) applicable to both 102 and 601 engines.

IMPORTANT: To use the tool on the exhaust valve of cylinder no. 4 (engine 102), the rod (1) must be attached to the front bore of the lever (2) as shown in Figure 2.. To compress the valve spring, pull the lever (2) in the direction of the arrow (Figure 2).

For all other valve springs the tool arrangement is as shown in Figure 1.

IMPORTANT: A modified pre-load gauge, tool no. 917 589 06 23 00, is now available for checking the basic setting of the lifters. The previous gauge, tool no. 900 589 04 23 00, remains valid. Please note the differences in checking the basic setting, depending on which gauge is used:

The thrust piece should be selected so that when checking the basic setting with gauge (900 589 04 23 00), the measuring edge (2, Figure 2) lines up exactly with the upper edge of the red measuring groove (1, see arrow).



Tool no. 917 589 06 23 00

The thrust piece should be selected so that when checking the basic setting with the modified gauge (917 589 06 23 00) the measuring edge (2, Figure 2) is between the upper and lower edges of the red measuring groove (1).

If these measures are not successful, check the clearance between the valve spring and cylinder head. Refer to Diagnostic Directory, Current Topics, Group 05: "Ticking Noise in Valve Train at Idle and up to Medium Engine Speed".
