A/T - Valve Body/Case Modification

REF. NO. 27/59

TO: OUR MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS

DATE: January 1983

SUBJECT:
MODIFIED VALVE BODY ON 722.3 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

As part of technological improvements introduced during the fall of 1981, a modified valve body (second version) has been installed in some automatic transmission models. This change occurred on eight cylinder vehicles as of September 1981 and on five cylinder vehicles as of December 1981. The transmission case and the intermediate steel plate were also changed.

Production Phase-In

Repair Hints

The second version valve body cannot be installed in transmissions with lower end number.

Use first version valve bodies on transmissions with lower end number (consult parts microfilms). When the stock of new valve bodies of the first version is exhausted, special valve bodies that must be installed together with a new larger intermediate plate, gasket, injector and plug will be supplied.

In addition, exchange valve bodies and exchange transmissions of the first version will remain available and should be ordered first, before ordering the special valve bodies and the necessary parts (see parts table).

Installation Procedure

1. Remove valve body from transmission (Service Microfilm Automatic Transmission 722.3, (Job Number 27- 400).

2. Remove lower cover (Job Number 27-430).

3. Remove plate (12) on lower cover and intermediate plate (14) with gasket (19) (Figure 1).

4. Install injector (118), part number 126 270 02 29, into new intermediate plate (Figure 2).

5. Place new intermediate plate with new gasket, part number 126 277 02 80, on lower cover.

6. Align gasket and intermediate plate by inserting two screws through plate and lower cover.

7. Install plate (12) on lower cover. Tighten hex head screws to 8 Nm (6 lb.ft.) (Figure 1).

8. Install plug (128), part number 126 277 00 84, into bore (Figure 3).

9. Check that valve body has temperature limiter (117), part number 126 270 05 50, if not install limiter (Figure 4).

10. Install lower cover (Job Number 27-430).

11. Install special valve body (Job Number 27-400).

12. Adjust modulator pressure (Job Number 350).

Engine 116 = 3,5 bar (51 psi)
Engine 617 2,9 bar (42 psi)

IMPORTANT:
Transmissions that were changed by installing a special repair valve body must be marked. Stamp letter X over ninth digit from left (arrow) in ten digit transmission part number. Only a special repair valve body should be subsequently used in those transmissions (Figure 5).

Time Allowance

NOTE:
Above times do not include adjustment of modulator pressure.
