General
The driver information system is operated using the:
- Control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3)
- Left multifunction steering wheel button group (S110) and right multifunction steering wheel button group (S111)
- Voice control system (VCS [SBS])
The control description comprises the following subfunctions:
^ Base function, audio

Base function, audio
When the basic "AUDIO" function is activated, the audio application last used is started. If a different audio application is to be started, it is necessary to activate the menu line and select the "AUDIO" menu item.
The following audio sources can be selected from the "Audio" menu item:
^ Radio (AM/FM)
^ Disk (CD/DVD)
^ Memory card
^ Music register
^ Media interface, with code (518) Media interface
^ AUX
Media containing MP3 data can also be played (detected automatically).
Radio (AM/FM)
If the "Radio" menu item is activated, the default screen appears. The following appears on the display:
- The currently set frequency, currently set station with the station name from the Global Positioning System (GPS) list (location-specific) and the numbers of their memory locations (if stored)
- A frequency bar in the frequency range or band for selecting stations.
If a station name is not stored in the GPS list, only the frequency appears.
Selection or settings are possible with the control buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit or the multifunction steering wheel button groups.
Disk (CD/DVD)
If the "Disc" menu item is activated and a CD or DVD inserted, the default screen appears.
The following appears on the display:
- Artist (if present on CD or DVD)
- Current track with elapsed play time
- Number of tracks on CD or DVD
- Medium (CD or DVD)
If no CD or DVD is inserted, the message "No Disk" is shown.

Title selection using skip function
The previous or subsequent track can be played by pressing the scroll forward/back button (S110s1) on the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) or the asterisk key and entry of the track number o the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
Fast Forward/Rewind
The playback position can be changed towards "Back" by pressing and holding the "Set station via station search, rewind, select previous track" key on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit or the scroll forward/back button on the multifunction steering wheel in the upper subfield. The playback position can be changed towards "Forward" by pressing and holding the "Set station via station search, fast forward, select next track" key on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit or the scroll forward/back button on the multifunction steering wheel in the lower subfield.
Memory card
If the "Memory card" menu item is activated, the default screen appears. The following appears on the display:
- Number of tracks on the memory card
- Current track with elapsed play time
- Artist, track names or group, if stored

- "Folder"
- Music folders on the data storage device

Music register
If the menu item "Music register" is activated, the basic display appears. The following appears on the display:
- Artist
- Current track with elapsed play time
- Number of tracks in directory of hard disk

- Playback mode (normal track sequence, folder mix, track mix, copy music files, delete all music files, memory location information)
- "Folder"
- Music folders on hard disk

Media interface, with code (518) Media interface
Selection or connection options:
- iPods are connected to the iPod connector.
- USB devices are connected to the USB socket
- MTP devices are connected to the USB socket
Menu guidance and its graphical display are accomplished on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and they are dependent on the portable device connected.
If the "Media interface" menu item is activated, the default screen appears.
The following appears on the display:
- Current track number
- Track name
- Graphical time and track display
- Name of current album
- Icon for medium that is connected (e.g. iPod)

AUX
If the "AUX" menu item is activated, the default screen appears. Only two speaker symbols are shown on the display.

Base function, video
If the basic "Video" function is activated, the video application last performed is started. To start a different video application, it is necessary to go back to the menu line and select the Video menu item.
The following video sources can be selected in the "Video" menu item:
- TV, with code (865) TV tuner
- Video DVD
- AUX (when accessories and configuration are present)
DVD video
When the "DVD video" menu item is activated in the Video menu item, the video picture is displayed on the display. Selection or settings via function bar:
- "DVD-V"
- DVD functions (menu, DVD title menu, ,Up Arrow, Down Arrow, Right Arrow, Left Arrow, confirmation, menu language, title selection and Go up) and settings (brightness, contrast, color, 16:9 optimized, 4:3, widescreen)
- "Pause"
- Temporarily interrupts playback; the current position is stored and the menu item changes to "Play"

Basic navigation function
The card data is preinstalled on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit hard disk. The card data can be updated by the customer or workshop by installing the data from an update DVD. This process is permissible only when the vehicle is standing still. After inserting the update DVD into the COMAND operating, display and controller unit, a question automatically appears whether the data is to be installed. After confirmation, installation is accomplished. If the installation fails (due to dead battery (G1), scratches or fingerprints on DVD, etc.), operation can be continued with the old data. After installation, the DVD can be removed.
If the navigation base function (Navi) is activated, the default screen appears.
The navigation base function consists of the following subfunctions:

Destination entry is possible in the "Dest." menu item The default screen appears.

Entry of POIs via map display

Route information and options
Display of route information and options (arrival time, distance, view route on map (route browser), inhibit route) is possible with the "Route" menu item. The default screen appears.
Selections or settings:

- Information such as distance and required time to destination or interim stop

- In the route browser, the calculated route can be scrolled through using the "Next" and "Previous" menu items.

Display compass, with code (245) Electronic compass
The "Display compass" function can only be selected on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit by selecting the following menus using the buttons on the COMAND operating, display and controller unit:
- 1. Menu "Navigation"
- 2. "Dest" menu item on function bar
- 3. Submenu item "Compass"
The compass is displayed on the multifunction display of the instrument cluster (A1) by selecting the "Offroad display" menu using the multifunction steering wheel button groups.
Basic telephony function
If the basic "Telephony" function (Tel) is activated, the default screen appears.
Selections or settings:
- "Bluetooth list"
- Access (selection) to telephones available in vehicle
- Loading option from memory card (when data is present)
- Delete functions
- Volume adjustment of handsfree system microphone group (A67b1)
- Switch off mobile telephone when it is connected to the cell phone separation point (X39/37)

Incoming telephone calls are acoustically and visually signaled on the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
Services (address book)
The address book service function is activated using the basic "Telephony" function (Tel) and then using the address book subfunction.
