GF82.85-P-0003GZ Cockpit Management And Data System (COMAND), Function
- except CODE (494) USA version
- except CODE (498) Japan version
- with CODE (527) COMAND APS (with navigation)

Component Identification:

The COMAND (Cockpit Management and Data System) operating, display and controller unit is a central control and display device for all entertainment and communications systems integrated into the vehicle. It can also be controlled with the buttons on the multifunction steering wheel (MFL).

Component Identification:

The COMAND operating, display and controller unit is installed in the center console.

From the COMAND operating, display and control unit, the following system components integrated into the device can be controlled:
^ Radio tuner
^ Map navigation with DVD
^ Basic audio amplifier
^ CD audio

The following external components are controlled:
^ Amplifier for sound system (N40/3) (code (810) Sound system)
^ CD changer (A2/6) (Code (819) 6-disk CD changer)
^ Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1) (code (388) Telephone "Handy", UPCI system)
^ Voice control system (VCS [SBS]) control unit (N41/3) (code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS]))
^ An external analog audio source can be connected to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via the AUX jack in the glove box. Data exchange via a discrete line.

Function requirements:
When circuit 15R is active, the functions of the COMAND, operating, display and controller unit are available. If circuit 15R is not active, the MOST subscribers can be activated by switching on the COMAND, operating, display and controller unit.
In this case, control using the multifunction steering wheel is not possible.

Radio reception
The COMAND operating, display and controller unit actuates 2 integrated radio tuners.
Operation via the interface is generated by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and displayed on the screen. The audio signals are processed, amplified and then output over the vehicle speakers by the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
With code (810) Sound system, the audio signals are routed to the amplifier for sound system, amplified there, and output over the vehicle speakers.

Playing audio CDs
The single slot drive above the display of the COMAND operating, display and controller unit and the CD changer (Code (819) 6-disk CD changer) are capable of playing CD audio media (in Red Book audio format) and data CDs with MP3 files (max. 99 tracks). Both disk drives can process text information, which is stored on a CD. Located below the display is the button for ejecting the CD ("Disc Eject").

Audio signal control
The COMAND operating, display and controller unit manages the audio sources such as CD changer (Code (819) 6-disk CD changer) and the amplifier for sound system (Code (810) Sound system). These audio sources can be controlled via MOST.

Compass
The compass display shows:
^ the cardinal points with a compass rose
^ altitude via altitude scale
^ the vehicle coordinates

Making phone calls
The cell phone (A34/6) is inserted into the UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) cell phone holder (A34/15) and is thereby connected to the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (Code (388) Telephone "Handy", UPCI system). The telephone function is included in the UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) control unit (Code (388) Telephone "Handy", UPCI system). The user can operate the system with the COMAND, operating, display and controller unit. The UPCI [UHI] (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) control unit (Code (388) Telephone "Handy", UPCI system) is connected to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via the MOST.

Navigation
The COMAND operating, display and controller unit has a navigation module and is responsible for displaying the map and for the entire input management of the navigation system.

TV reception (analog/digital)
The TV combination tuner is connected to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via the MOST. The video signals are transferred from the TV combination tuner to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit via a direct Y/C connection. Audio data are sent digitally to the amplifier for sound system (Code (810) Sound system) via the MOST and then output at the speakers. Video and audio data can be transmitted by the installed rear entertainment system (Code (864) Rear entertainment system).

All of the video sources can be operated when the vehicle is at a standstill. For reasons of driving safety, no video picture is shown in the COMAND operating, display and controller unit during driving (as of 3 km/h).

Rear entertainment
The rear entertainment is the entertainment system for rear passengers. The audio-video splitter that is integrated into the DVD player is the central control unit for the rear entertainment. It controls and processes the signals of the internal DVD drive, the TV combination tuner and the optional devices connected to the AUX inputs. The rear entertainment functions are operated using a remote control.
The video signals and the interface are output via the left rear display (A40/5) and the right rear display (A40/6). The audio signals are emitted over the headphones or, if the amplifier for sound system (Code (810) Sound system) is installed, over the speakers.

The functions of the rear entertainment system (Code (864) Rear entertainment system) are described in greater detail in the rear entertainment function.

Backup camera (RFK)
The purpose of the backup camera system is to make it easier for the driver to maneuver while backing up and parking.

The system consists of the following components:
^ Backup camera, which records the area immediately surrounding the rear of the vehicle
^ Backup camera power supply module for voltage supply of backup camera and processing of the pictures received.

The backup camera voltage supply module forwards the camera pictures of the backup camera to the TV combination tuner which then transmits them via a screened line to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.
If no TV combination tuner is installed, the backup camera voltage supply module directly transmits the camera pictures to the COMAND operating, display and controller unit.

The functions of the backup camera, code (218) Backup camera are described in greater detail in the backup camera function.

The functions of the voice control system (VCS [SBS]) (Code (813) Voice control system (VCS [SBS])) are described in the VCS [SBS] function.
